Trajectory - Sidekick - 85 gr 777 - 250 shockwave
« on: December 14, 2008, 01:46:56 PM »
I only have access to a 100 yd range.  My normal hunting distance is usually no more than 75 yds in the woods so accordingly that's what I zero in at.  Last trip as I was packing up I asked the guy in the lane next to me if I could take a shot at his fresh 100 yd target and proceeded to lay it within a 1/4 inch dead center of the bull. I left feeling confident that I was good out to a 100.

Went muzzleoading this weekend and with the sun out and a foot of snow on the ground the visibility in the woods was exceptional.  Anyways out comes a nice mature doe standing broadside at what I estimated to be at 150 yds.  Knowing I was good to a 100, and not having a clue as to beyond that, I aimed about 2 inches high and let her rip.  After the smoke cleared I was somewhat surprised to see just a couple kicks in the snow after the deer dropped in its tracks.

Walked it off at a 130 yds from my blind to where she lay.  After examining the shot I hit her at what looked to be exactly at my point of aim, that being about 2 inches higher than normal.

So again not having access to a range any longer than a 100 yds, can anyone help me with longer distance trajectories?  Seems like she's dead on at 75, 100 and 125 but what kind of drop offs can I expect beyond that?
It would also be helpful to know what kind of energy that load has left at these longer distances also.

Thanks.

Did some poking around and ran across this.
Doesn't answer all my questions but might serve as a good reference:

I never shoot that far either but looking at the .50 cal charts, that sounds about right. Sighted in roughly 2" high at 100 will shoot about 5-6 inches low at 200.
I did sight mine in dead on at 100 today with a 260 scorpion Sabot and then shot it at 50 yards and it was about 3 inches high. Most of my shots are usually around 50-75 yards in the woods.

Your gun can not be "dead on" at 75, 100, 125 yards.  I would believe it might be "dead on" at 75 and 125 yards and a little high 100yards.  I would guess why you see this result is that you are looking at a single shot, one shot at a doe.  I am guessing that your guns group size is within the bullet elevation path between 75 to 125 yards.  Too many factors to base your results on only one shot.  You have to do multiply shoots and determine where the group is hitting.

Does your MZ normally shot high when clean?  Could this result in what you saw?

Good luck and happy shooting.

Cheers,
Chris

guntercb:

You are correct and I stand corrected!   The more I thought about it after posting this the more I realized I had aimed at the top of the back as I originally estimated the deer to be at 150 yds. and was trying to compensate for an unknown amount of drop beyond 100 yds.  The enhanced picture of the doe at the far left shows the entrance wound and displays a realistic drop beyond 100 yds out to what in fact was 130 yds.  Still would be nice to have something more than a 100 yd range to practice on but I'm getting more and more comfortable with the capabilities of this firearm.  Thanks.

BTW....good point about shooting high on a clean barrel.  My slug gun consistently shoots high when clean and accordingly once I zero it I don't touch it until the end of the season.  However, I have not  noticed the same to be true with the ML.  Thanks again.

MI.sabot,

You ML might not shot high when clean, but I believe some do.  I have not really shot mine enough to know.

Holly smokes those deer are huge!  I hunt in Florida.  Our average buck is probuably 115 pounds.  I need to come up to MI to hunt!

Happy shooting.  I too want to find a long range, time, and some money for more shooting!

Cheers,
Chris
