I looked at a older contender and the serial number started with letters.
Is this a common thing and I have just never noticed before,or it is something a little different?

I've never looked at a blue one that started with letters.  The stainless starts with the letter 'S' and the AAII barrels start with 'A'.  If it was a blued frame with an A, someone just removed the coating and blued it.
