Heavy cast bullets
« on: September 21, 2008, 04:41:41 AM »
I have several hundred pounds of lead lying around my house and really want to be able to use cast bullets in my muzzleloaders.  I have a Green Mountain 1:28 twist barrel on my flintlock and have tried bullets up to 410 grains with no luck.  It does shoot sabots very well.  I have heard that with the fast twist, a bullet in the 460gr range is best.  Anyone have any experience and know where to get a mould for bullets that heavy.  I have a 375gr mould that works very well for my 1:48 twist barrels but they are no good in my fast twist barrels.

Rick,

A 440 to 460 grain ALL LEAD conical should be perfect for your 1:28 GM barrel. Use a wad between 70 to 80 grains of powder and the bullet for best results.

Mountain Molds makes some great molds, and you can even design your own bullet if you want with their online bullet design feature. IIRC the top band is included in the nose length, call first if you go that route.

Before I purchased a mold I would try to find a bullet that will work in your barrel. No Excuses makes a 460 grain .503" diameter bullet that works awesome in my 1:24 and 1:28 rifles.

Other excellent bullets would be the 445 UC SHORT, or the 460 MT NEx from The Bull Shop. Dan can size them to most anything between .499" and .5045" I thing.

it will also shoot maxie balls well my tc hawken does .  but it does better with a 400 grain paper patch bullet on top of 9o grain of 3f  black powder. i also use a felt wad on top of the powder.
