Belted magnum cartridge in an Encore rifle?
« on: September 22, 2008, 12:04:21 PM »
What is the magic or mojo to make the extractor work with a belted magnum case.  I bought a newly rechambered barrel (264 Win. magnum) off of another guy on GBO a while back and with the extractor that was on it I couldn't even chamber a round because it got hung up on the belt at the extractor.  I stoned the extractor down enough that it worked, or so I thought.  I shot about thirty rounds through it and found my load, then brought the TC home and cleaned it.  I went back to the range Saturday to finish final sight-in and after I fire the second round the case had to be pushed out with a cleaning rod, then after firing another round it did the same thing so I packed up and went home.  I installed another extractor (from EABCO) and same thing, the case hangs up on the belt. Only difference is that the chamber will close on the loaded round but when fired the empty has to be pulled past the belt with pliers.  I like the Encore but I don't think they are meant for belted cases.  Has anyone else experienced this in their Encore?

I've never had an extraction problem with my Encore 7mm Rem. Mag. barrel.  Perhaps when the barrel was rechambered, the proper extractor wasn't installed?  Since it's a rechamber, I doubt T/C will have anything to do with it.  Consider sending it to an Encore knowledgable gunsmith like J. D. Jones as SSK Industries.

Yes Sir,

I don't have any belted magnum barrels, all mine are 30-06 Springfield, 223 Remington, 454 Casull head size with no problems at all.

I saw a person had the same problem at a range with a 300 Winchester Magnum Encore barrel.

I have heard some people bend the extractor down and away in order for the belt to clear.

I have two Pro Hunters, 7mm Rem Mag and .338 Win Mag.
I have loading problems with both. The belt would catch on the extractor.
I called TC and the Tech dept there said this is normal and to just drop the cartridge in then bump it with the joint of your thumb and it will seat past the belt.
Works on both my rifles very well.
The belt just needs to push the extractor down a little and continue forward into the chamber. This is the way it is suppose to work.
If you notice the extractor will push down a little when the gun is unloaded. Designed that way.

Hope this helps.

on mine I just used a diamond file and took the sharp edge of the egector. Works fine now
