Savage O/U
« on: September 20, 2008, 05:04:27 AM »
I saw a Savage O/U last nite at a local gunstore that fits me like a glove. It was marked either model# 400 or 440, I can't remember which. Ya'll know anything about these? I know a guy who had an older Savage that was made by Valmet, but don't know if this is one of them. If I remember correctly, they had this one marked for $399.

Good prospect or run and don't look back?

Thanks, HWD

I really don't know anything about them. On another thread about them I think someone said they are being made in Turkey but am not sure if in Huglu by the same folks making the guns imported by CZ and DeHaan or not.

If it fits you buy it then give us a report on it.

If you are correct on the model number, it is indeed a Valmet. Grab it before someone else figures it out. Dandy gun at that price.
These came in during the 1970s.

I went back to the shop and looked closely, again, the other day.

Turns out it was made by FabArms. I believe that makes it an Italian or Spanish gun. At least it ain't Turkish! I pulled it apart and looked for choking info...Full and Modified. The receiver area had a pissload of grease in it along with all the dirt and grass that it had been around over the years. The owner of the store was out that day and had left it in the hands of his not so smart(and probably not gonna be there much longer) assistant. I'm gonna go back to get a bottom line price. I'd like to clean all that crap out before buying it. Take away some of the grease and the barrels may flop around. We'll see...

It would be worth it, were it a Valmet (sliding top barrel latch), but IMHO not if it's one of the  Spanish guns of the time.

The very latest Savages, seen in today's magazine ads as the Model 412 or 413, IIRC, w/gold birds, etc are HUGLU's from Turkey - dealer cost (new) is about $450. ( I was looking at one in .410, at a friend's store, and he's got it tagged for $550 retail.)

I bought one back in the 70s.  I think I paid about $250 or so for it.  It shot great but the finish was so brittle that a piece would fall off every time I bumped it on something and it didn't have a recoil pad on it.  It was fine for bird loads but anything else was a little rough.  The bottom line was it hit almost anything I aimed it at but I had a recoil pad put on it and it messed up my line of sight so that I couldn't hit the side of a barn after that.  I ended up trading it for something else.

The Valmet built guns were great guns, especially for what they cost. I bought one new in the '70s. Think it cost $300. I later bought an Ithica and gave the Savage to my son. He still has it and it is in excellent shape after all these years.
