Temptation is just wrong every time...
« on: October 17, 2008, 04:42:14 AM »
Last night, on the way home from football practice at O'Dark-thirty (another thread with football - jmayton), I see a PU truck slowing down on its approach towards us.  As I get closer I see six pigs on my side of the 2-lane road rooting in the Johnson Grass about five feet from the edge of asphalt.  Now I am getting into "kill mode" (thanks to jmayton for that analogy), reaching for (not actually getting) the 45 ACP behind the seat, and am thinking out loud about letting the #2 son whack one out of the window.  Then a simblance of reason, as the son said "Hey Dad, isn't that illegal?", overtook my tired brain.  Heck YES it would have been illegal - shooting from the Public ROW.

Thanks to the FWC Hunter's Safety Course he voiced what I knew but wasn't thinking.  I am proud of him.  Behind us (within 50 yards) is the house of the Sheriff's Deputy and his wife who is also a Deputy LEO.  It would have "upset them" to no end.

I got tempted, tested, and found wanting.  I need a refresher in RIGHT MIND THINKING.

Temptation isn't what's wrong it's giving in to it that is wrong. I'm glad you didn't give in.

Several years back I used to see them regularly on the almost desolate road to the skeet range. This road leaves the town of Gadsden and goes more or less parallel to US411 just on the other side of the mountain from it. The road runs thru a valley with a mountain on both sides and there is not a single house on it until you get at least 3 miles out of town and then there are a few houses and trailers within a mile or so and then more open road with no homes for another couple miles or more. It's quite remote to be so close to civilization.

The hogs just roamed up and down the road all the time. All were white in coloration clearly not so long removed from their release from a pen somewhere but since they were in all size and age ranges from what looked to have been born last week to some in the over 300 and perhaps even over 400 pound size that clearly had lived some of their life in a pen.

I never shot them altho with hardly any traffic and being so remote it's unlikely anyone but me would have known if I had. Some one did tho as I've not seen a hog there in years so clearly the hurt was put on them big time.
