Hinge Pin Grease?
« on: August 03, 2008, 02:07:28 AM »
What does everyone use to lubricate the hinge pin on these rifles?

I use Superlube, but anything is better than nothing IMO, I've used white lithium and Tetra before.  ;)

Regular gun oil for me, more to protect the metal then lubrication.

JPH45 shot his 38-55 lose in 2500 light loads, so pressure wasn't much of an issue, mainly just the wear from opening and closing the action for every shot taken. If you look at any hinge pin in any H&R single shot that's been shot much, the blueing is worn off at the wear points, a little lubrication on it will go a long ways towards keeping the action tight and shooting well. The pin is harder than the underlug, so the pin can't just be replaced to tighten it up, the barrel gets replaced or shimmed.

I use regular gun oil on mine.

When I said nothing I did not mean to imply I run it dry, it merely gets a LIGHT coating of gun oil, as do all metal surfaces, when the gun gets cleaned. No heavy grease, gear lube, or special lubricant. When I said nothing I was responding to the term "Grease"....<><....:)

Ok, why oil & not a grease, wouldn't a thicker lubricant that stays in place provide a better protection on this area the an oil that could drip out while being stored?

That's exactly why I use good grease, it stays where I put it where it does the most good.  ;) I don't use oil for the same reason that I store them muzzle down, oil from the bore migrates down due to gravity and ends up on the breech face and can get on the latch and shelf which causes accuracy issues.  :'(

I also use grease, gun grease from Shooters Choice. Its red and comes in a syringe like applicator.
 Works well for me!!

Here's an interesting option I hadn't thought of. I was chewing the fat with one of my techs and he literally threw a good option at me. Brake backing plate grease, it's a high temperature & pressure black moly grease for lubricating brake backing plates, caliper slider pins & anchor friction points. It won't wash off, tolerates heat & extreme pressure. Thoughts?

That brake pad grease will work.  It will stay where you put it.  If you get it on your clothes, throw them away or wear them with the grease cause you ain't gonna ever get it out.
