LOL 30-30wsm in a way that's really how you can look at the lil russan round. Or at least in the case of my Model1 20" 7.62x39 upper

Today I was shooting handloads, 170grn Sierra FP's originally intended for 30-30win over 29grs of H335 for an avg velocity of 2020 FPS

Accuracy was OUTSTANDING and oddly enough feeding was flawless as well.

For a comparison I shot some factory 170grn Rem ammo through my 20" pre64 win M94, velocity averaged 2175 for this load and accuracy was nowhere near as good. appx 4"+ at 100yds for 5 shots. Granted the semi buckhorn sight on the winchester isn't nearly a precise as the NM sight found on the AR

It would appear that ballistically through the usage of quality handloads the little russan  round will do 93% of what 30-30 will do in the same length barrel. That my friends ain't too shabby and of course I still have the option of shooting spitzers. Either way this is defiantly my close in huntin load

all groups were shot at 100yds off the bench using iron sights. The center group is only 4 shots due to a small snafu when seating the bullets.

I've always looked at the 7.62x39 and the 30-30 as ballistic twins also, but I have always been thinking about whether the little low vel 125 gr class 7.62 loads would be of any use in a 30-30. The idea is intregeing but since not many are claiming the 7.62 is a great deer gun, and the 130 gr 30-30 factory loads are not catching on I've decided that the idea isn't worth pursueing.

Whoa!  Your Winnie (or the lot of Corelokts you used) is getting VERY good numbers!  And your AR does well with those 170's too (accuracy wise).  Either way, any of those 170 gr. bullets designed for .30-30 velocities are pretty darned good deer medicine.

Dummy me.  I didn't even know the 7.62X39 upper was available for the AR. :-[

I was rather surprised as well as a couple years a go I chonographed this same load in a Sav340 and it failed to break 2000 fps.

There's a post bout is somewhere
