Wolf drops dog when owner gives chase

Scooter may have a hole in his head and a wounded ego, but at least he lived to bark about it.

The plump 13-year-old schipperke/dachshund mix survived a wolf attack early Tuesday morning when his owner chased down the wolf in his pickup truck.

“I thought he was going to be dead,” said Travis Capps, holding 20-pound Scooter in his arms Tuesday afternoon outside his home off Nelson Road in North Pole.

Instead, the wolf dropped the dog when Capps pulled up behind it as it trotted down the road with Scooter in its mouth. Scooter, except for a small puncture in his head and acting a little dazed, doesn’t appear any worse for wear.

“He’s just sort of in shock,” Capps said a few hours after Scooter’s scare. “He got whupped up pretty good.

“I think his pride is hurt more than anything else,” he said, scratching the roly-poly black dog’s ears.

Chances are good the wolf is part of a pack that killed and ate a dog in the same neighborhood a month ago and that state wildlife biologists suspect also killed a dog at 19.5 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road last week.

The latest attack was nearly a repeat of the first dog killing in North Pole on Oct. 31, when a homeowner in the same neighborhood let his two dogs out early in the morning and one of them was killed. The difference this time is there was one wolf instead of five.

“I let my dogs out to pee at four in the morning and then I heard all this barking,” said Capps, who lives just a street over from the first incident. “I thought they were fighting with each other, so I ran out there and yelled at them.”

His golden retriever, Shasta, came running up the driveway, but Scooter didn’t. Instead, he saw a “black streak” dart across the end of his driveway and then heard Scooter yelping as the wolf carried him down the road.

“I was in my underwear, so I came back into the house, threw some clothes on, jumped in my pickup and drove down the road thinking I could intercept him,” Capps said. “I thought he was dead.”

He didn’t go far down the road before he saw the wolf trotting along, carrying Scooter in its mouth.

“As soon as I got up on him with the pickup he dropped (Scooter),” said Capps, a 37-year-old equipment operator.

Capps picked up the dog, whose neck was covered with saliva, and drove home. Then he grabbed a gun and drove back down the road. The wolf was trotting back toward the house.

“He was coming back up the road,” Capps said. “As soon as he saw my pickup he ran back into the woods the way he came.”

The incident surprised Capps, even though he knew his neighbor’s dog was killed by wolves a month ago.

“I’ve lived here 35 years and never had anything like this happen before,” Capps said.

After last week’s attack at 19.5 Mile Chena Hot Springs Road, state wildlife biologist Tom Seaton with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game in Fairbanks said the wolves could potentially target more dogs now that they’ve identified them as food.

“I doubt they’ll go on a dog killing spree, but there’s no doubt they’re looking at them as a food source,” he said on Monday talking about the Chena Hot Springs Road attack.

Capps, meanwhile, plans to keep his eye out for wolves in the neighborhood.

“This wolf pack has got familiar with this subdivision and has got a taste for dogs,” he said, standing outside his home off Nelson Road. “For them to come in this far is pretty ballsy.

“I’m not into slaughtering wolves, but I’m a hunter and as far as I’m concerned wolf season opened on Nov. 1,” Capps said. “Maybe I can make Scooter a little fur coat.”

Wasn't another dog killed too and verified by a biologist.  Must be why the moose are so elusive in North Pole.

Yes:  Dave there was a lab type dog killed and eaten a couple of weeks ago.  Then this little dog was grabbed this week.  I've been out in the flood control since and have seen tracks of two differant packs.  Last week I did see a single black wolf running out there.  I was not able to get close enough for a shot.  Went out this morning and did not see a thing.  I am going to keep looking, and trying to call when conditions are right.

OK, now they have killed two dogs in Two Rivers in separate attacks.  They have killed one dog, and grabbed and lost one dog in North Pole.  Yesterday one was spotted following a child to the bus stop.  I would like to saturate the area with snares, but too many people let their dogs run loose and you would have a high mortality rate on pets if you did that.  When we take the Beagles out either my son or I go with them.  We carry a 12 ga. or a .223.

Three dogs now and one was following a person on a trail.  Sounds like you guys need some predator control up there for sure.

Predators learn quickly where there is an easy meal. The dogs up on the Bering coast learn quick not to bark at polar bears.  The polar bears quickly find the ones on the chains barking to be easy meals.

Too bad bears don't eat wolves....  Bears are a lot easier to find...

Looks like a few anchorage dogs are being taken by a pack just north of anchorage now.

They were here.  The Beagles have been quite all day, no barking.  When we took them out they peed on the corner of the porch and would not leave the area of the back door.  Took Bert out with me to get the paper this morning, he would not get out from under my feet, all the way to the street and back.  Went into Fairbanks around noon with the wife to finish our shopping.  When I got home both dogs refused to go outside when I opened the back door.  In fact they hid under the truck in the garage.  I went out and found where the porch, the well housing, my snow machine, and the fill pipe for the oil tank had been used as a scent post.  Wolf tracks went around the house, they peed on the front steps, then they went up on the deck, and peed on the corner of the sliding patio door.

Neighbor came up this evening said his dog also refused to go outside.  He said he saw something out on the pipeline behind our houses, he thought it was wolves but he could not be sure.  I went out and scouted the area.  Found where they had bedded down out in the back.  When they left they were headed toward Hurst.

Went for a walk last night up the pipeline.  Met a man out doing the same thing.  He related this story to me.

Friday morning he got a call from his neighbor at 4AM.  "Wolves are circling your dog".  He looks out the window and four wolves are circling his dogs dog house.  He puts on his pants and grabs a rifle.  Runs outside and there are the wolves.  One on top of the dog house, one on each side of the door, and one in front.  At first he could not understand why the one in front was shaking, and going back and forth so violently.  Then he realized the wolf was pulling the chain that was attached to the dog.  The dog and the wolf was having a tug of war, the dog to stay inside the house, the wolf to bring it outside so his partners could grab it.  The guy fired a shot, the wolf holding the chain dropped it and ran.  The others followed him and disappeared.

Why did he not shoot it?  Defense of life and property.  He would have had no problem explaining it as there were obvious wolf tracks around the dog house.

We don't have a problem with wolves down here in the California desert, but we do with coyotes, especially if you have chickens.  A couple of years ago they raided my chicken pen at about 2 am.  I responded with my 870, fixed with extended mag and light, and out of the 6 I saw 4 died.  I have not had a problem with the coyotes since but my tree hugging neighbors have.  I keep an eye on the local pack and if they start getting too close I make an effort to shoot some of them.  I don't get many but they give my place a wide berth!

When I say he fired a shot, I meant he took a shot at the wolves.  Only, being excited, and running, he did not take his time and make a good shot.  Therefore he missed, just providing more education for the remaining wolves in this pack.  Two have already been taken.

Sourdough , I've used a 223 some for predators but not for wolf hunts ,do you shoot them heart and lung shots and does that put them down normally within a 100 yards or less ?

I use Speer TNT bullets and shoot for the heart/lung area with a 30-06, most of the time.  With a .223 I'm usually out for Coyote, and I use Nosler 55gr Ballistic Tips.  But if I run into a wolf, same thing heart/lung area.  Very explosive and they do not go far, 20 to 30 yards.  Unless I hit a big bone, like the shoulder blade.  Then I have to track them down, easy in the snow.  Have shot two wolves with a .223 Handi last winter.  First one I made a broadside shot, not hitting a rib, right into the Heart/Lung area.  Turned lungs into Jello, it did not run at all, just spun around and fell.  The second one was running and I hit the shoulder.  I had to track it for about half a mile in the snow.  Second shot to the head did him in.

With my Mini-14 I use 50gr V-Max or Speer 50gr Spire Point.  These are jump shots and not always the best shots.  If I hit the heart lung area they usually only go 20 to 60 yards.  If not I have to track them sometimes as many as two miles.  Not hard in the snow, unless they go into the brush and thick trees.  That's why I prefer the 30-06, it puts them down right there.

Wolves have no business anywhere near a residential area, house or cabin. And they know better, sometimes a reminder is in order. Wolf packs don't last very long around here in Tok. I like the 243 win. for long shots and the 7.62x39 SKS for inside 200 yds.
No household pet would stand a chance against one adult wolf much less a pack.
