Almost finished with this Hawken!
« on: October 03, 2008, 03:18:43 PM »
A friend sent this to me as it was in pretty bad shape, worn off bluing, nipple hole was stripped, horrible aftermarket sights, cracked stock.  Rifles barrel was perfect so i've spent the last 3 weeks restoring this CVA Hawken .50cal back into shooting condition and installed traditional buckhorn style sights  " A PITA to put on!" a german silver front blade sight, a new sear, fixed the crack and spent 2 weeks alone browning everything and then polishing the bore.

Before,

AFTER!

Rifle is still getting some finishing touches like browning the rear sight and final wet sanding with 2000grit.

Super nice sights! They are clear for me,

BigBlock, nice job on the Hawkens! I have one I put together from a kit about 10 yrs. ago. Have a real problem with the barrel though. It would'nt print a round on paper at 25 yrds. Got to looking real close and found the entire length of the barrel was nothing but chatter marks from the rifling process and to top that the screw hole for the rear sight had been drilled completely through to the bore with a Major burr on a land. Contacted CVA, they were'nt real interested in solving the problem so the smokepole went into the safe and stayed there. But this was also 10 yrs ago. Now I'd like to replace the junk tube with a faster twist( mine is a 1 in 60). CVA says now I need to give them the serial # to see if they can do a swap with what they have on hand. Maybe a search will help with a replacement outside of CVA.Again, nice job, I like the grain on the wood.

$85 for a .54cal barrel for your cva hawken at deer creek.  CVA no longer has parts for their old timey rifles. They sold everything to deer creek.

$85 is a heck of a deal!

Ever try some JB Bore paste to smooth it out?  That barrel should have dovetails cut for the sights, not holes.

BB just checked the sights, front is doved-tailed, rear is screwed on. I don't know If  JB's wil clean this up, marks are pretty deep. I pulled up Deer creeks site and got a bunch of threads and complaints about them . apparently the state attorneys been contacted about "fraudulent business practices"  Don't know but there sure seems like alot of po'ed folks concerning them. Have you heard anything about this?

Not quite sure if thats the right company. Deer Creek's company is located in Indiana.

CVA:
Answer: We Discontinued Side lock muzzleloaders both Pistols and Rifles in 2004 due to lack of demand. We will still continue to offer Mainsprings, Sears, Wedges and Bolsters screws thru the year 2010. Most all other parts have been sold to Deer Creek Products, a service center that is located in Indiana. Deer Creek Products can be reached at 765-525-6181.

Different Deer creek, thanx for the phone# I'd really like to use this ole horse, I still haven't completely converted to in-lines. Ive got a firebolt but it drives me to drink trying cap and de-cap it , not alot of room in front of the bolt and my fingers are a little too fat, hence the factory gizmo they send with it.

Had a quick question for you before I bail out for the night. Have you ever glass- bedded the action and barrel on a side-hammer? Don't know if it would accomplise anything but was considering it for a winter project. that is if I can get away from the methane wells long enough to do anything :P :P :P
