Any Idea when the 17 Rem Fireball......
« on: October 18, 2008, 04:51:34 PM »
will be chambered in Thompson barrels.  I'd like one in a 23" Contender please!
I aim to please - but often miss.

The custom shop has 'em in 17 Remington for both the Encore and the Contender. If you reload, MHO would be to choose the 17 Rem over the Fireball as you can "load down" the Rem to Fireball velocities, but you can't "load up" the Fireball to Rem velocities.

But that's just my 2 cents.

As Dave suggested the 17 Reminton has been available for years both from TC and custom barrel makers for Contenders, the 17M4 from custom makers for years and from TC's so called custom shop not as long.   Imagine some of the custom barrel makers are already set up to do the 17 Rem Fireball.

Those who don't reload will go for the 17 Remington Fireball, but those of us who do reload and have had 17M4's for years will probably never buy one.   I know I won't.

Dave makes a good point on versatility, but I've never felt like I gave much (if anything) away carrying my 17M4's instead of my 17 Remingtons on a given hunt.   Basically the same with the 221 Fireball verses the 222/223.   You loose a little velocity and so PBR, but not enough to worry about in most hunting situations.

For the Contender's I have Bullberry 14" and 20" 17M4 barrels and 14" and 20" 17 Rem barrels - and a TC factory 21" 17 Rem carbine barrel.   Have bolt rifles for both cartridges as well.

Evolution at work. Over two million years ago the genus Homo had small cranial capacity and thick skin to protect them from their environment. One species has evolved into obese cranial fatheads with thin skin in comparison that whines about anything and everything as their shield against their environment. Meus

I never managed to work up any interest in a .17 Remington it just seemed too over bore for my tastes. I've always liked the idea of the Mach IV but I guess I don't enjoy the case forming as much as Ladobe and while I kinda wanted one I kept putting it off cuz I just didn't wanna mess with the case forming which from what I read required multiple steps and annealing to get there. I can do it and have but don't enjoy it and just never got into it.

When Remington legitimized it and began offering factory ammo and brass I jumped with both feet and am in love with it as I always figured I would be if I got a Mach IV.

I agree if you've already got the Mach IV no need to get a .17 Fireball but if you don't have a Mach IV you really should get a .17 Fireball.
