Musket Nipple Replacement Help... Pedersoli Double Gun
« on: September 21, 2008, 12:04:34 PM »
Anyone know the size for Italian Musket Nipple Replacements?  I have a catalogue from Deer Creek Outfitters that says - M6x .75?

Would that be right?  Going on a Bear Hunt and need to convert over from #11's...

Thanks!

Why convert?  Are you having ignition problems?

You can always take your existing nipples to a hardware store and try them in metric nuts to get the correct diameter and pitch.

Semisane is right. If your going on a Bear hunt, now is not the time to change ignition. you should be thoughly familiar with your gun and it's reliability long before the hunt.
Musket caps will not provide better ignition for you, a clean-dry fire channel with CCI MAG caps or Dynimte Noble (the best!) with a proven clean dry nipple is all you need.
If confidence is the factor you need; pratice at the range with Knight's "Hot Shot" nipple and Nobel 1072 caps.
Musket caps and nipples do have a bigger hole and more fire,,,,but they also throw more garbage into the fire channel,,,gotta tell ya man,, it's about clean and dry.
p.s. take the nipple to the hardware store,,you'll find the right thread. 6x.75 is a good bet, it's either that or 6x1 or .250x28. it's a no brainer, it'll fit or not. :)

Good ideas anout sizing...

I just got the gun so I need to range it a bit...

I know, with Black Powder it's always about Clean and Dry...

I just want more Fire when I raise it up and take a Bead on that Bruin in the North Georgia Mountains...

Thanks for your input!

I believe the Pedersolis are standard 1/4x28 thread but as others have said, I'd not recommend changing them. The musket caps are enough larger that you'll likely have problems with the hammer nose recess not aligning properly with the top of the cap.

Hey All:

Thanks for the input, I picked up two Stainless 6x .75's and they slid right in...  Recesses are fine with the caps, Pedersolli designed these guns for either...  I'll have to clear the nipples well before powder then close the hammer with a rubber nipple cover before capping to shoot that bear! I am as giddy as a school girl!

Be careful there, Pedersoli's web site lists the nipple size as being 1/4x28. The 6x.75 nipple may indeed "slide right in" a 1/4x28 hole but will be sloppy and not exactly match the thread pitch. You most certainly don't want to blow a nipple. Please be absolutely sure you do have the right nipple thread. It is difficult because those rifles have been in production for quite a few years and it is possible they may have changed the thread over the years but current production is listed as 1/4x28.

I'll add my 2 cents here since I manufacture aircraft engine fasteners...

Coyotejoe's advice to be sure that the thread is correct is important. Yes, a 6 x .75 metric nipple will easily thread into a 1/4 - 28 US hole. It's easy to install because it is a loose fit.

However, you will lose a lot of the strength here because a 6mm thread is .236" in diameter, and a 1/4" one converts to .250". Doesn't seem like much (.014"), but when you're talking about the strength of a threaded joint subject to the pressure of a rifle chamber, it's significant. If the nipple happens to unscrew just a bit from where it bottoms out in the gun, the strength of the connection will become MUCH weaker, and the more you fire it, the worse it will get.

It's easy to check if your gun takes 1/4 - 28 nipples or not; just get a 1/4 - 28 bolt and see if it threads in (clean the hole first, of course). If it doesn't go, it's a safe bet that it's 6mm.

That's an expensive gun, and your eyes are even more valuable.

She shot well at the range...

Spit those PowerBelts into a Pie Tin at 75 yards...

Not sure if it was the Box of 180 Grain Federal .300 Win Mags or the 4 shots of .444 Grain PowerBelts over 120 Grains of T7 but my beefy 46 year old shoulder is a little tight today (I LOVE IT!)...

Shoulda seen the Eyes Bug out when I pulled that Pedersoli Double .50 Cal sidelock out of the case... Measured, loaded and fired (NO I DID NOT pull both triggers at one time :))...

Great day on the range... sighted in Momma's .243 H&R;  my New (to me) Howa 1500 Stainless .300 Win Mag and of course the Iron Sights on the "Son in Law"...  My new pet name for my Double...  The Son in Law is going Bear Hunting with me and the "Son in Law" this coming weekend in North Georgia...
