G2 not firing the 7x30 waters
« on: September 27, 2008, 10:57:33 AM »
I've got a 7x30 waters barrel that I've just loaded up some rounds to shoot and it won't set the primer off. it just hits the primer but not enough to to set off the primer dent in primer is small. I can shoot my 256 barrel on this same G2 and it goes off every time as well as the 44 mag. Anyone know what I might try?  I did try several 7x30 case and none would go or put much of a dent in the primer. Thanks for any ideas.

Prolly not fully locking up. Try snapping it closed REAL HARD and if that helps that's definitely the problem. Likely a locking bolt issue.

From the very little info provided my first guess would be improper head spacing.

Well I put this barrel on my old style contender and it fired every shell that the G2 wouldn't  ;D so it must be a lock up issue of some kind. Thanks everyone for your help and ideas

Barrel probably works on your old style Contender because there is a different gap between the breechface and the barrel. As was said it would seem to me to be a headspace problem. Do you have a hammer spur on the gun ? If so take it off.

No hammer spur, but I may have sized the case a tad to much. I'm still learning about this fire forming stuff. Thanks for your replies.

I don't know what case sizing would have to do with it, the 7-30Waters headspaces on the rim.

I don't know what case sizing would have to do with it, the 7-30Waters headspaces on the rim.

Rimmed cases for break actions such as the Contender or Encore should still head space off of the shoulder. Sometimes the counter bore in the chamber is cut to deep or the frame to barrel gap is a little to much. If so you will have a head space issue. If you the best of accuracy from these break actions best to head space off the shoulder, rim or no rim. Also if you keep resizing the case more than needed case life will be short due to excessive strecting. A few firing doing this and you will get case seperation, been there done that.

:) I have fired a lot of commercial off the shelf ammunition in my 7-30 with no problems
at all....No misfires..none of it head spaced on the shoulder...You can allways use your
barrel for a case length gauge..barrel off the frame held vertical... drop the cartridge in..
see if its flush.....works for me... :)
