VTR Scout
« on: October 04, 2008, 07:26:01 AM »
I think a .308 VTR cut back to 20" with a scout scope setup, would make a cool & fast little rifle.  They could lose the porting for my part.

I agree. The porting isn't necessary especially in the smaller calibers. Has kind of a cool look to it tho. Dave

If they made it in a semi auto version it would be perfect. ;D

Indeed & of course we had better ask the Libs what they think of the Scout scope & it's "image" impact.  ;D

Not an issue, the Scout is a hunting rifle.  Do you think it would make the Scout weight limit with a 20" barrel?

Not an isse for the rest of us anyhow. If I hunt successfully with a rifle, then it becomes a hunting rifle
for the person using it, regardless of Libs & those who are ready to say give at the first sign of struggle.

Personally, who cares what it weighs, the gun is light as is, I doubt cutting some barrel off would make it heavier, but that's just me.

To be a Scout Rifle it can't weigh over 6.6lbs with the scope & sling.

By the definition of the Scout Rifle Conferences held under the auspices of Jeff Cooper the scout rifle has been defined as a general purpose rifle suitable for taking targets of up to 400 kg (880 pounds) at ranges to the limit of the shooters visibility (nominally 300 meters) that meets the following criteria:

Weight-sighted and slung: 3 kilograms (6.6 lb). This has been set as the ideal weight but the maximum has been stated as being 3.5 kg (7.7 pounds ).
Length: 1 meter (39 inches)
Nominal barrel length: .48 meter (19 inches)
Sighting system: Typically a forward and low mounted (ahead of the action opening) long eye relief telescope of between 2x and 3x. Reserve iron sights desirable but not necessary.  Iron sights of the ghost ring type, without a scope, also qualify, as does a low powered conventional position scope.
Action: Magazine fed bolt action. Detachable box magazine and/or stripper clip charging is desirable but not necessary.
Sling: Fast loop-up type, i.e. Ching or CW style.
Caliber: Nominally .308 Winchester (7.62 x 51 mm). Calibers such as 7 mm - 08 Remington (7 x 51 mm) or .243 Winchester (6 x 51 mm) being considered for frail individuals or where "military" calibers are proscribed.
Built-in bipod: Desirable but not mandatory.
Accuracy: Should be capable of shooting into 2 minutes of angle or less (4") at 200 yards/meters (3 shot groups).

Rifles that do not meet all of these specifications are technically not "scout rifles." Thus rifles of this general design in calibers other than those stated above are not true scout rifles but actually "pseudo-scouts."

Rem says the VTR weighs 7&1/2#, I don't think it would make Cooper's weight goal with a 20" tube. The 2" being cut off are ported & big ports at that, so not as much weiht reduction as expected for that dia. barrel. But why does it have to weigh that, you already changed one spec by going from the desired 19" to a 20"? You say "Rifles that do not meet ALL of the specs. are technically not Scout Rifles" Then why did you change the barrel specs?
And I see a contradiction of sorts from Col. Cooper. He says that a lessor cal. round would be for frail individuals. OK, if that's the case, then why does the gun have to weigh 6.6# or at worst no more than 7.7#. Is that for frail individuals? Why would a 250# Athlete need the same weight rifle as a 150# CPA who has never worked a day of manual labor or done anything physical in his life? No, doubt some can swing
quickly & carry just as easily a 8.5# rifle as others can carry a 6.6# rifle, just the way it is.

Besides, isn't this a dangerous path for you? Less than 1 week ago you made this comment in the Bolt Action Rifle Forum concerning Tactical Rifles & the Term Tactical that is used for products sold:
"It's for Junior Rambos. It helps them compensate" Well, the Rem M700VTR is just that, Rem labels it as
VTR= Varmit Tactical Rifle  ;D

Ok we could cut the barrel to 19" but then it still wouldn't make weight.  Not much point in the project if it won't make weight.
