Running Through My Head
« on: October 01, 2008, 09:24:12 PM »
Trees towering overhead,
Little fuzy-tails,
Rolling over in bed.

Lungful of fresh air,
a leaf floating down,
Dew drops in my hair.

Fall is here,
I wake early,
Grab my gear.

Kiss her cheek,
sweet nothings,
ill be gone a week.

Babbling brook,
wings aflutter,
cold natured truck.

Crinkle of leaves,
under my feet,
Swaying trees.

All these things,
I remember,
from my dreams.

Almost here,
cannot wait,
It draws near.

Leather slings,
Gun oil,
these wonderful things.

I cant wait for,
I cannot sleep,
Out the door.

Its Hunting season,
time to go,
this is my reason.

A Safe and Happy Hunting Season to All

THINGS I REMEMBER

Gun oil and leather
cold steel and wood
trees and leaves and fluttery things
crisp clean air, dew drops
the breath of a deer
squirrells rabbits and doves
a faithful old dog
too old to hunt longing to go
early breakfast
backstrap, busquits and gravy
4-wheel drives horses and hogs
an alarm clock and a groan
a wife who thinks she lives alone
clouds and sky, wind and rain
things i wouldnt give up for anything
Grandpa....hes proud
cane in one hand, gun in the other
hunting stories about
good dogs, big deer and bad winters
hunters getting lost, and then found
Brunt of the jokes, all take a poke
campfires and coals
cast iron and glows
splitting firewood for the camp
coleman lanterns, wind up radios
old army cots, and wool blankets
The good life

GOD.........I love it all.

Jamesrus, I admire your passion.  Good to hear someone with their mind on the important things--like life and living.

Hey everyone feel free to add your own here. I typed those as they came into my head the other night. I was sitting here at work on the towboat wishing i was home for the start of squirrel season. Thinking about the grandfather i lost in 1990 who taught me a lot of what i know about the outdoors. Watching him and the reverence he had for the outdoors, the life skills he used, and the far away look he always had in his eyes while hunting, made me want to put some of it down in here. Sometimes i think he was born in the wrong century, I could always see him in buckskins with a powderhorn over one shoulder and a kentucky rifle in the other. Im ready to go home so i can spend some time in the woods with my 7 year old daughter who looks on this world with the same eyes full of wonder for the outdoors as my grandfather. How i wish she could have know him, I think they would havebeen the best of pals.

Thanks

I can almost smell the wood smoke and hear the crackle of the camp fire.
The last few morning have been cool, I told my neighbor that there was a hint of deer camp in the air he just looked at me kind of strange. The poor man dosen't hunt or fish. I truly feel sorry for him and those like him. For me there is nothing like a cold morning in the woods or being on the water as the morning mist rises off the surface.
