TWO CATS
« on: July 29, 2008, 08:23:43 AM »
Here is a bobcat double I got with my Thompson Center TCR-87 using a .17 Hornet barrel. I got the young male in the lungs with a 20-grain Hornaday slug loaded to 3,650 fps. There was no exit hole. I did not initially see the mother until she ran off. She stopped after running a few yards to look back. She was in some high grass so all I could see was her head. I grabbed the wrong ammo, a cartridge loaded with a 15-grain Berger bullet loaded to 3,950 fps and got lucky and hit her in the mouth, in the center between the lips. Again there was no exit hole but the skull, which I wanted to keep was ruined. I've had several potential chances to get doubles on coyotes, but was never quick enough to get off a second shot.

This was in Nebraska at an aquaintance's deer hunting spot.  He told me that he frequently saw bobcats there while deer hunting, plus gave me the location. I got lucky and ran into these without using a call. With a call I generally get hawks and and other birds to come in, but not shootable preditors.

Great job, I've never had a double on cats. On the call you may want to try a critr call open reed and go with higher tones like mouse squeaks or pillated woodpecker. Sometimes the rabbit calls sound to big if we blow to long, remember little animals have little lung capacities.
