5R Milspec?

I found out today that a nearby gunshop is one of the dealers that can get the 5R Milspec.  They had one on the rack and several in the back!  In talking to the guy behind the counter...and obsessively fondling the rifle, I learned that another employee is getting outstanding accuracy out of his.  I'm looking for a good long-range rifle mainly for punching paper but also for the occasional long shot on hogs or yotes.  I've looked at the Savage Predator in .243 (I know, it's evil of me to mention Savage on the Remington forum), the Rem VTR in .308...and now the 5R.  What're your thoughts?  Is it worth the cost over the VTR?  Is it just a gimmick by Remington?  Anybody have one?  Share all, please.

The Remington "5R Mil-Spec" may well be "the most accurate .308 caliber out-of-the-box rifle ever"

They have at least two of them....hmmm.  It's definitely at the top of my list right now.  Anything else and I'd feel like i'm settling.  Do you know what trigger it comes with? 40X, X-mark pro?  I know the stock is a hybrid between the LE models and the Varmint models....are there any other differences that set it apart (other than the rifling)?  I've just noticed that there is a lot of speculation about it online and Remington seems to be pretty quiet on the subject.

Other than the rifling pattern and twist rate, the current production "5R Mil-Spec" rifles are standard production Remington 700 VS rifles as far as I know.  The newer ones may have the X-Mark Pro trigger but the 2 older ones I've examined didn't.  Even the regular old 700 triggers are outstanding IMO.

If you have access to a 5R, nab one if not both. Awesome rifles, regardless of which trigger it may have.

This rifle has peaked my interest for sure. I spent several hours today reading up on them since GBO was down for a few hours. I found about 4 of them for sale on the internet anywhere from $899.00 to $1,059.00. The later one is on Gun Broker and you can even put it on lay away for 60 days. Sure wish I could afford one. Dale

Thanks SniperVLS. I just did the Map Quest thing on them and they are still 243.68 miles from me. Don't look like I will be going there any time soon. ;D Dale

I'm more fortunate...the shop I found these in is only 60 miles away.  I think I'll have to stop there everytime i go to town just to remind myself what I'm saving up for.  Their price was $1037.  I figure that's pretty fair considering what they go for elsewhere and I'm not having to pay (or are already paying) the FFL use fee.

Just looking at their website...they're now showing a price of $984???  Maybe you can pick it up sooner than you thought!
