Son's First Buck

My son was able to fill his first buck tag on Friday afternoon. Yep, I'm pretty proud.
Here it is in his words:

"Today after cross-country practice my dad and I went to hunt for antelope. My dad told me there had been some nice bucks where we were going, but hunters had shot most of them. I didn't really think I would see a nice buck, but thought I would see some does or a tiny buck. Right as my dad parked the truck we saw a small group of antelope with a buck. It was pretty windy and they were bedded down. I don't know why they didn't spook, but they remained bedded. As I was setting up the buck stood up and was looking at me but didn't run. My dad told me to shoot a little further behind his shoulder since he was not all the way broadside. At the shot the buck fell instantly. He went down so fast I thought he was moving away with the does, until my dad told me he was down.  I used a Berger bullet.

I was shooting my 6mm-6.5x47 Lapua MOA."

That's a great buck, congratulations.  I gotta try that on my next trip to South Dakota.  Always see them at 400+ yds. and I'm usually after other game at the time.

Great Job!!!!!! thats a heck of a setup you have!!  remember you are a lucky guy alot of guys don't get to hunt with there fathers. How far was he? did you recover the bullet? just getting info on them berger bullets.

Congrats on some great planning and preperation. Shots like that don't get done thinking about them. Shows lots of practice, practice, practice. GREAT JOB - BOTH OF YOU!!

Thanks for the encouraging words guys.
Erik has somewhat of a different perspective on distance than most do.
My son has been shooting a MOA handgun since he was 9 years old (14" 260 Rem MOA Maximum, 260 grain NBT's).
The first week he started shooting a SP, by the 3rd day he was a consistently hitting a sillywet ram at 500 meters and has been in several comps at 1,000 yards, using the MOA and XP-100's.
All of that being said, shooting a live animal under field conditions is different than off of the bench or steel from the prone position.
I am very proud of him.
His first antelope kill was a doe last year and he used one of my XP's (6.5-284) and made a 260 yard shot from the prone position (1-shot downed the doe permanently).
He was happy for his first buck that the range was an easier shot, also using the Harris bi-pod.

xphunter - congradulations to you and your son.  You must be a right proud dad.  Of course, your son should be proud of his shot - he sure looks happy and good for him.
