PACT Digital Scale (digital scales in general)
« on: August 08, 2003, 04:20:57 PM »
Anyone using/used a Pact BBK digital scale?
I bought one (my first digital scale) and have never felt comfortable with it.  It never settles for long while measuring loads.  For example -
dump load in, settles to 25.4 gr, then 3 seconds go by jumps to 25.9, then 3 seconds go by, jumps back to 25.4, etc, etc.
Usually, the first value is correct (checking on mechanical scale) - but not always.
Should this thing settle out and stay at a one value?
Damn electronic gizmos!

thanks

Ryan

I`ve never been a big fan of digitals.
I have a Pact Precision scale that I use to weigh bullets, cases, and other objects of unknown weight. I don`t use it to weigh powder charges any more as I seem to be able to use a balance beam scale almost as fast as the digital to get to a given wgt.
The digitals need to warm up before use for 15 min or so and should be calibrated when warm. They are sensitive to electrical fields and a cell phone, floresent light starter, ect should be kept off your bench and away from them when in use. They also are more (IMO) sensitive to air currents. Keep the vent from your air conditioner and forced air heaters shut when useing one.
One more thing to keep in mind, the scales we buy for reloading -balance or digital- normally have a + or - .10 gr accuracy range. The varying weight you`re getting could be partially caused by the tolerance of the scale in addition to other causes. The wgt may truely be 35gr and show 35.1 and reweighted show 34.9 although it more than likely will give a repetable +/- wgt variation.
There are three kinds of men. The ones that learn by reading, and the few
who learn by observation. The rest of them have to pee on the electric
fence.

I use a Dillon that I bought about 6yrs ago and it's still going strong. As long as you keep it clean and store it in the same place you'll be using it then it needs very little warm up time. I'll buy another if and when this one gives up.  KN

rck329:  I dont have the brand you have but I have a 1010 and a elec. by rcbs and it is getting a lot more use as I tend to adjust to it, as posted in some earlier posts you have to allow some warm-up time and you cant have any fans blowing in the room, make sure you are away from any kind of draft, extra people walking in the room will make mine jump around so I only load when by myself when using it. :D   JIM

I have one and use it a lot. I let it warm up, and make sure the ceiling fan is off before I use it. Also, make sure any cordless phones, cell phones,
and such are off. It really doesn't like a cordless phone. Other than those few idiosyncrasies, it's fine.
