30-06 Mil round question
« on: January 20, 2009, 06:38:53 AM »
I'm new to collecting and am having trouble finding info on a 30-06 cartridge I have.  The headstamp is marked TW and 54, which I understand, but it's got an odd bullet tip. The main body of the bullet looks like a standard FMJ copper color, but the tip appears to be a separate component, is the same color as the brass case, and is somewhat loose.  I've got some AP rounds that have the black paint on the tip, but there's no paint on this one. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Scott.

Hi
TW...Twin cities
54... made in 1954
If you posted a picture of the bullet ... Maybe I have a book  "30-06's that I have seen" maybe the title. It was written by a guy that collected 30-06. Lots of pictures.

Jim,
Thanks for the reply. I'm still trying to figure out how to upload a photo. My jpeg is too large, and I'm not sure how to reduce the size down to where it will be accepted. I tried to register with the photo uploading service that Graybeard recommended, but I'm still waiting on their confirmation email, after several tries and several days.

Hi
I looked it up in a book. Silver tip = API  Orange tip = tracer

You may have a reload in a military case.
Remington used to make a hunting bullet with a bronze tip. It was very popular as a hunting round.
Perhaps someone used that military case, even leaving the military primer in, and replaced the full metal jacket bullet with a Remington Bronze Point bullet.
I was clued into this possibility by your comment that the tip is brass colored, and loose. If it were painted, it wouldn't be loose.
Years ago it was a common practice to pull the military bullet off a case and replace it with a hunting bullet, leaving the primer and powder charge unchanged.
That may be what you have. I sure wouldn't shoot that cartridge; it's best to only trust your own reloads.

Much obliged for all the help gentlemen.  I've got some other mil rounds with painted tips, but this one threw me. I had never seen a vintage bullet that looked like the tip had been added separately.  I wouldn't think the accuracy would be all that great when I can move the tip from side to side several thousandths.  I definitely won't fire it.  Thanks again!
