280 Remmington Lover!

I just aquired my first 280. It is a Ruger M77 MII (unfired) in a Hogue full lenth aluminum bedded stock. I am putting a Pentax Game Seeker 4-12x40 on it.
While I have read a bunch about the round and it sounds like a perfect all in one caliber. What do you all like about it? Have any of you used 100 -115 grain varmint loads? How about heavy 175's for big game? As you can tell I am pumped about it and want to know more about it.  
I picked it up as I had sold my last rifle and someone had given me three boxes of Federal Premium 140's and a set of dies.  I started reading about the round in Cartridges of the World, the Barnes book etc and thought, wow.  This will really do a lot!  Then the search began hence the Ruger..fit my budget :)
As always your thoughts and advice is very much appreciated.

Congrats on the new 280. The 280 is a great round and you sould be very happy with the Ruger. I have only had limited experiences with Pentax Game seeker but none of them were good. I would take a look at the optics forum and research that scope. There have been a few others with not so good experiences as well.  >:(

While I don't have a 280, I do own several rifles in 7mm. It is hard to find a better all around caliber. There are tons of choices of bullets, which really does make it a great caliber for the one rifle hunter. The 280 is right about in the middle of the factory chamberings for the 7mm family, making it one of the best of the best. Good Luck

My middle brother has used one since the early 80s, has killed more than 100 deer with it and a couple of black bears, all he has ever used is the 140 gr CoreLokts...He has a 7mm-08 as well, he uses this gun for woods (it's a Model 7) and the .280 for fields...

My other brother has 2-.270s, really can't tell any difference between the three cartridges when I skin their deer...

I own a 280 and a 280AI and a 7mm-08 and a 7MM Rem Mag.  I love them.  You will be very satisfied with the 140 grain bullets on deer sized game.  For elk you can go to the 160.  I don't think the 175 has any advantage.

I've never used a 280 for varmits.  There are better calibers for that, but nothing beats the 7mm bullet on deer. 

You do not need premium bullets.  In fact, my best accuracy has never come from a "premium" bullet.

Forgot to mention I have a two Contenders in 7-30W.  I shoot 120-130 gr bullets in the Contenders.

Right now I have 3 - 280s.  Have had one for about 18-20 years.  Finally got rid of 7 mags as they didn't offer that much more for the extra noise and use of powder.  Always liked 7mms, started with 7x57 and jumped to tha 7mag.  now I have 7mm-08s and 280s.  Have a 7-30 waters barrel to put on a Win 94 and a barrel at a gunsmiths to get bored and chambered for a Handi-rifle in the same caliber.  With the right bullet, I would tackle anything in the lower 48 with the 280. Yer gonna like her!  DP

The .280  and AI version has been one of my favorites for years. The factory loads are slightly under loaded in my opinion. Had it come out first, I'm not ss sure the .270 Win. would have survived. With the exception of thick skinned game it will handle most game with ease within normal ranges. It wouldn't be my choice for the big bears however.
The only place I see the need for the 175 grainers, would be for the largest species of moose. I pretty much stayed with one load, that being a 150 Nosler Partition, and used it for everything in the lower 48.

I had a Rem. 700 Mountain Rifle in .280 Rem. with a Leupold M8 4X scope.  It was a terrific all around rifle.  I used it for deer, antelope, and elk.  I gave it to my son and he hunts with it in Montana.

That .280 shoots most factory ammo very well and likes reloads with 139/140 gr. bullets.  We have never used it with the lighter bullets and as light as the rifle is we have not tried it with bullets on the heavy end.  There is really no need to go either way.  The 140 gr. bullets perform just fine.

I have a .280 Rem, as well as a 7mm WSM. I really like the .280. It's killed more deer than any other cartridge for me.

I have a .280 in the Ruger M77 MkII.  It offers more power, distance, and versatility than the .270.  Don't get me wrong, the .270 is about equal, but the .280 has a ballistic advantage.  I really love this round for deer.  I load up either 140 gr SGK's or 140 Accubonds.  I plan on using it for elk with either 160 Barnes Triple Shock or Partitions.

The 280 is a terrific cartridge . I have had one in a Remington Mountain Riffle for many years now. I have only fired it twice at game Both deer heads are on the wall . I havnt used it for a number of years now due to experimenting with other calibres   BUT my grand son just saw it and  likes it  HE will use it this deer season and it will Probably be his 16th Birthday present next year .
 Nosler partitions in 140 grain will do anything in the lower 48.

The only good thing about the 280 is that it is so like the 270. The one 280 that I owned shot well enough but not as well as any of the 270 rifles I have owned. I like the 270 a bit better as I can neck down 30-06 cases for brass a bit more easily. If I need more than a 150 grain Partition out of either cartridge it's time to get the 30-06 out.

Alright the season is over in Montana now and the vote is 280- 6 deer, 35 Rem-1 deer.  Had to take the old girl out on a date, she was gettin' mad when I kept taking a 280.  None of the 7 deer went more than 30 feet, and 5 of the 6 were bang-flop that the 280 took.  DP  (35 rem was a bang-flop, too.)

Got it out for the first time last weekend.  The "range" is a quarry in the high desert of Idaho.  It was so windy that my target stand kept blowing over...yada yada. 
Having driven a ways to get there, I was not going to not burn some powder.  There were a few cans at about 50 yards who gave there all for the cause.  I spied a small white rock at about 125 or a little more yards and cranked up the scope to about 9x.  I allowed for the wind...20-25 mph and squeezed one off.  The little white rock vanished.
I know that it really wasn't a MOA true range test but none the less, I was thrilled because I hit that 3 or 4 inch rock at that distance with the 6th shot out of the box.  Who knows, maybe I hit the little devil right in the brisket, where I was aiming....
Now I can't wait to try it on real paper  ;D

  Yes i love my 280 Rem...  I built it in the 70's for a light weight general purpose mountain rifle...  It's built on a LH 700 Rem. action, with a douglas bbl, and New Zeland claro walnut stock...  It is a serious tack driver with 145 Speer BT's, (they are a bit soft for my likeing) but 150 NP's would be a better "all around one load for this cartridge" bullet...

  Anyway, i drug it all over Alaska on glacier blk. bear hunts,



  To Kodiak sitka blk. tails, turdra caribou and beyond,



  It's never let me down, and when it comes to bolt action rifles, i could live out the rest of my days with it in my hands...
