.22 mag. semi-autos
« on: October 06, 2008, 04:58:42 PM »
I've been thinking about getting either an AMT auto mag II or an excell arms  .22win mag to wear around the cabin for pest control and for fun. anyone have any experience with either one of these or have any other recomendations?

They are a fun gun but imho 22mags for around the cabin is overkill and too loud.  A Ruger MKII or MK III is more affordable to buy and shoot of course you'll look alot classier to the Squirrels and Chipmunks if you carry a Bearcat or Single Six and it gives them a fighting chance because those MK II's are scary accurate.  Those AMT's are accurate, I shot one in 30carbine also that was loud as hell, stay away from that one unless you like a big "crack" everytime it goes bang.

I agree, a 22 magnum handgun seems to be a bit of overkill.  I had a 22 Ruger Single Six with a LR and Magnum cylinder.  The magnum was not accurate at all, but the LR was nice and fun.  My personal pest control sidearm is a Ruger 22/45 LR.  By no means is it a tack driver, but for wearing around the cabin it should work fine.  Plus, a value pack box (550) of Federal bulk 22LR ammo is @ 10 bucks at China*Mart.

I have one of the Excel Accelerator pistols. It is extremely accurate and gets over 1600 fps with 40gr loads and over 1900fps with the 30gr hyper loads. Plus you can get a 17HMR barrel for it as well. Its a big pistol however and even bulkier with a red dot scope on it. I am going to get a bandolier type holster to carry it.

I believe High Standard brought out the AMT 22 mag pistols as well. They dont get as high a velocity as the EXcel but they are more easily packed in a belt holster. The excel shoots about 200fps greater than the AMT with all loads. The AMT in turn shoots faster than the Ruger Single Six in 22 mag. The AMT and Single Six are more easily packed. I guess it depends on what you want it for and if you plan on carrying it around the farm while doing other things.

Thanks Hunter6657, thats exactly what I was looking for. I'm now thinking towards the AMT (if I can find one) as I would be carrying while do any number of other things.

Jeff Quinn has a good test report on the Excel and the AMT on Gun Blasts.
