300 win mag pro hunter
« on: October 09, 2008, 06:59:40 AM »
I just bought a 300 win mag pro hunter barrel for my encore. I looking for a hunting load Doesn't have to be smoking fast or anything souped up just hunting with it. Bullet advice would be helpful too. Not sure if I want a ballistic tip or not not sure if i am into putting that kind of hole in a whitetailed deer but i will concider them if they are the best for accurcy and performance. Thanks for any help.

I've become an enthusiastic of Berger VLD bullets in a 300 Weatherby Magnum and a 25/06 Remington.  They are marketed for hunting and they're a match bullet.  Berger bullets have been, for a long time, a favorite among bench rest shooters so their potential for accuracy isn't disputed.  I've taken 5 animals with them (4 pronghorn antelope and a whitetail deer) and they work very well.  If you're into long range shooting, you won't find many bullets that beat their ballistic coefficient.

The most accurate load I ever loaded for any of my 300WMs was a Hornady 180gr and H4831sc. Don't remember the powder weight but it was about 3/4 ways up on the charts. This work-up took me a while in my first 300. I've used the same load in the others and it's worked well in all of them.
