more help please 480 475 gr. cast load data?
« on: October 12, 2008, 04:54:38 PM »
I've tried h4227 from 1255 fps to 970 fps., and velocity spread has always been about 50fps. not real accurate loads. I have blue dot, and unique, but no data for this bullet with them. I'm looking for about 1000fps., maybe even lighter. I'd really appreciate some data for these if ya got em'. Thnaks and God bless!

I don't believe I really understand what you are asking about data for. Can you be a bit more specific?

two things for you to try. First if your downloading 4227 it sometimes works better using cci 350 mag primers. Ball powders are kind of hard to ignite well and the problem is even worse with low pressure loads. then another alternitive is your unique. Id try starting at about 8.5 grains and work up slowly till you get to a 1000. With that heavy of a bullet in a 480 you might want to consider 900 fps as your target speed with a powder like unique. I dont like bluedot and will not use it anymore. It is a finiky powder that doesnt go up in pressure uniformily. It goes from mild to wild with just a small increase in charge weight. I would use it for sure with any heavy for caliber bullets like in this case.

I'll try the unique. I'm beside myself with the the 4227. it's about the slowest burning you can go in this kind of cartridge (handgun). I'm getting almost no leading. barrel was clean after three passes with a nylon brush and rem oil. no solvent needed. report was mild, even with my magnaport job. I figured using 4227 would keep the forcing cone in nice shape as well.  Seems even with reduced charges i was getting a little unburnt powder in the barrel. accuracy was poor however. at @8-10 yds. (sight in for crony)i was getting 3 " groups.? there was about a 50 fps spread in the shots I cronygraphed. I'll see what the unique does. Thanks again, and Lord bless.
