WOLF GUN SPRINGS
« on: October 12, 2008, 03:50:10 PM »
I am having trouble with light primer strikes in a handi and wanted to install an extra power hammer spring.  When I went to the Wolf spring site it shows 2 springs for the handi, one is a single coil and the other is a double coil.  I am unsure about the one I need.  Any help on this?

I am sure the double spring is more potent then the single. Before I went that route I would check a few things. First is head space handis are known for being awfully loose on the head space. then check for Firing Pin protrusion.  I believe it is listed in the Faq's. You can check head space with a primed empty case fire the case and measure protrusion of the primer then check allowable head space for your particular cartridge.

The Wolff double spring is made for older H&R firearms with no transfer bar, it has double anchor legs instead of the single anchor of the OEM spring with a loop that wraps around the back side of the hammer between the anchors in a small notch that can be seen on the gold hammer below. I don't know if it will work with a modern hammer without modifying the hammer, it works great with the old style hammers after removing the transfer bar(lifter & striker), more on that in the low profile hammer mods 2 in the FAQs.

Lendar...did you have a barrel recently installed?  The reason I ask is that I suddenly have the same problem once I received my gun back from Remmingon.  I am going the route of changing the hammer and spring (I am going to us the Wolffe double spring) to eliminate the lifter and striker.
If you can't be a good example, then you'll just have to serve as a horrible warning.

I am having trouble with CCI primers.  Not just in the handi rifle but even in 2 ruger pistols.  Large mag and reg pistol.  I replaced the main springs in the ruger pistols and now I have 2 handi rifles that I need new springs in.  Thanks for all the info.

Seems to me Fred was having no-fires with CCI primers too, he did a little tuning on the firing pin, and I sent him some new single springs and he was good to go.

Yes Tim is right. I found I had a lot of resistance in the firing pin and its return spring I checked it with a trigger pull spring and found after I
polished the firing pin, the firing pin seat hole and the reduction of one coil on the return spring I had if I remember right 12oz less
resistance.

Together with a new hammer spring and and lowering the hammer extension and bobbing the top of the hammer, I have not had anymore miss fires. This is written up on my web how to tune a Handi.
The hammer modification increases hammer speed by reducing the
the travel radius.

Yes CCI primers are harder than others like Federal, Rem or Winchester.
