What twist is in my .270
« on: July 04, 2008, 01:01:25 AM »
This is my first Browning bolt action rifle. I was wondering if anyone knew what the twist rate was for a .270 stainless stalker 2.
Went to the range last night with some 130 accubonds, not very impressed ( 57 gr. of IMR 4831), may work with the bedding some but would like to know what bullet weight the rifling twist was designed for?
Thanks ahead of time.

The 2007 Browning catalog lists the 270 win Stalker as a 1 in 10 twist. I doubt they change things like that very often so it should cover you.

Try a faster powder - Varget, 4895 or Benchmark and 140 gr. Interlocks or SST's for deer size game.

You'll be wanting to use the 140's----don't touch the rifle until you do.
The Hornady 140's have been consistantly fantastic over the years.

Had an old A-bolt and a new X-bolt both in .270 and they both behaved the same.

130's---shotgun pattern---only good for getting on paper.
150's---usually a 1-2in group
140's---A-bolt was a one hole tack driver----new X-bolt first and only time out so far-- all shots touching each other---not one hole(yet)-- .75in across----outside to outside.

IMR-4831 is my go to powder for 150 grain bullets in my 270 Winchester and easily achieve MOA accuracy.

I had a few 130 grain bullets around and used the same (57.0 grs of IMR-4831) load you have and also gave me MOA.

I do believe your rifle is up to the task, question is do you have a good enough scope and solid mounts?

Leupold vari-x2 3x9, with solid rings and base. Went ahead and bedded it. Change powder to 4895. Just under an inch with 130 ballistic tips, it still does not like the accubonds. May eveventually put some pillars in it. She is good enough for deer season my problem is I don't know where to put her in the line up.
Its a toss up between my Browning, my 700, or my Marlin 450, hmmm, there is always my Swede I just finished in a nicely figured piece of walnut (Fraid I might scratch that one) better not, ahh, decisions, decisions. Those are the good kinda decisions thought. ;)
