"Golden Boy" Rossi M92 45LC
« on: October 16, 2008, 07:09:30 AM »
I walked into my favorite Reloading shop yesterday to get some powder and primers and was offered a Rossi M92 rifle with the brass reciever for $200. I immediately jumped on that deal and its a sweet looking rifle with a brass receiver and buttplate and black stock.
Does anyone know when they manufactured this particular variant?
I've seen them listed as a EMF Hartford brass frame and it has LSI and Rossi stamped on it.
I'll probably have to limit it to regular 45 Colt loads but I should be able to get to 1200fps with some loads without undue pressure on the rifle so that it can be used as a carrying around rifle good for deer at close range. I thought it was brass plating at first but a magnet does not stick and looking at the machining cuts in the reciever it appears to be solid brass. I definitely won't be shooting any of my 45 Colt "Magnum" loads that I shoot in my Super Blackhawk 45 Colt Ruger (customized with a Super grip frame, red ramp front site and whitel outline rear). I have a Marlin 1894P in 44 magnum for the hot loads anyways.

I called Legacy Sports at 775-828-0555 and they were able to give me the shipping date of the rifle which was in 2006 using the serial number. The brass frames were discontinued in 2007 but he did say that they were all built tough to take even the Buffalo Bore loads in them. He said the only problem they had with them was on the 454 models cracking the stocks but that they remedied the problem with that. I'll still probably only shoot milder loads through it that will get the equivalent of a 44 mag in handgun velocities or a little less since this will be a 50-75 yard rifle with the open sights and also shoot 45 Colt "plunking" loads with 250gr SWC's.

Anyways, any light shed on when these were produced would be greatly appreciated.
thanks,

You got a SUPER DEAL on that. I got one from ShaneR on here and allowed him $450 on it in trade on a rifle of mine he wanted. He later bought it back for that same price from me. I never fired it while I had it but it was a nice looking and feeling rifle. The stock on it was not black however just regular walnut finish but I guess it's basically the same rifle. Dunno if someone painted yours black after it left the factory or if the black had been removed on the one I had or if they are just two slightly different versions of the same.

ALL of the various Rossi M92s are worth far more than $200.

I have a Model 92 made by Rossi with 24" octagon barrel in 357 mag. I ordered it several years ago from Navy Arms. After I refinished the walnut, and slicked up the action, it is one that will be in my estate when I am gone. It is about the only rifle I use anymore, and like GB said, it sure cost more than any $200.00. Want your money back?

Yah, I hear ya. I couldn't beleive it had been sitting there for 2 weeks with 250 on the tag. I just happened to be going by there for primers and powder. I've had a few of the Rossi M92's as well-- 2 in 357, 2 in 44mag  and a stainless one in 45 LC. I paid far more for those as well but at the time they were cheaper at 300 for the 357's and 375 for the stainless. Its a keeper and the technician dude assured me that it could take the pressure of the Ruger 45 loads but I doubt I'll try to push my loads past 1400fps in the rifle which will be plenty enough for 50-75 yards shots max on deer. Besides I have a Marlin 44 mag for 1750fps loads.
This is the first brass frame one I have seen and it came from the factory with the black stock.

Just for the record, that 45LC loaded right, will do anything your 44mag will do rifle wise, and perhaps then some.
