Love my new Stainless 45-70 Ultra Hunter with Thumbhole Stock
« on: October 15, 2008, 09:01:20 AM »
Sighted in my new H & R Stainless 45-70 Ultra Hunter with Thumbhole Stock.  After using J-B and installing my Burris Black Diamond 3-10x-50mm scope on Weaver #49110 high 30mm mounts.  I took it to the range to sight in.  After shooting a box of Hornady LEVERevolution 325gr's thru it the bottom right target shows the last 5 shots.  I don't understand what all the talk is about the heavy recoil from a 45-70.  My gun doesn't kick any harder than my 30-06 Remington 700BDL, as a matter of fact it has a slower recoil that I find much more pleasant than my 30-06.  I have a feeling I'll be using this gun alot more than I expected.   I originally had a Pentax Gameseeker 3.5-10x-50mm mounted on Leupold PRW #54150 high rings.  It would shoot two touching shots and then a flyer off to the right, I'd let it cool and then it would shoot two touching shots and then a flyer off to the left.   I checked the mounts etc, nothing was loose, I suspected the scope as not being able to handle the recoil and that the cross hairs were moving.  Since it was shooting so well I decided to put a better scope on it and I love the outcome.  I love this gun and am looking forward to adding a few more Handi's to the collection.  I am wanting to do a Rem 260 barrelled gun in the near future, as soon as I get the funds saved up.

my experience as well.  I am thinking about the buffalo bores 300 grain speer uni core.  Its another 300 fps over the leverloution.  how many more mules will 300 fps =?  What damage on whitetails will this speer unicore be?  Chart shows 100 yd zero & -2 @ 150yds.  Going to setup something with a mill dot scope & see what I can work out.  Also i was looking to change out my synthetic low comb stock with a camo monte carlo synthetic stock.  Used the numbers from Tim in the FAQ & customer service says those numbers are no good.  Only have the black syn. monte carlo.  Who made the camo syn last year?  LOVE the 45-70.

Wow, that's a lot of scope for a .45-70!

Everyone should have at least one .45-70. ;D

A gun that shoots this well deserves a good scope, and I have many shooting lanes over 300 yards.  Last but not least my old eyes don't see too well early and late.

Those numbers are right off my invoice, but that doesn't surprise me at all about Remington CS, they've given out lots of misinfo, but they may also have discontinued it too.  :-\ Choate makes all of the synthetic stocks, except possibly the new style that's checkered, dunno about it yet. Give Choate a call/email to see if you can order it direct from them.  ;)
