Petersoli Sharps action strength/load level
« on: October 13, 2008, 03:42:57 PM »
I've researched this area every few years and it seems the party line is: original (BP) load levels.  But it seems to me the action is inherently strong and with modern metallurgy they should be able to easily digest higher pressures.   :-\  The strength of the Handi Rifle is well researched, but has anyone looked into the Sharps Replica?  Lets use the 3 45/70 load levels since I can relate to (understand) them.   ;)

This statement by Dick Trenk is on the BPCR site.
It is dated Sept 2004, but may have been posted later.
It should answer your questions about the Pedersoli reproductions.
www.bpcr.net/site_docs-results_schedules/documents/pedersoli_proof_rules_and_allowable_limits_09-04.htm

If you have a problem with the full url, it is found on the technical information page.

From what I read in this article, the answer to your question is "no".  Do not exceed 29007 psi/cup in any of their sharps.

I personally like knowing what the limit of my equipment is, not because I want a cheap elephant gun, but the feeling that comes with knowing that I am shooting well within its safe bounds.

My reading on the subject has indicated that most supposed experts consider the Sharps action to be basically a weak not a strong design and that even when made from modern steels it is not for the Marlin or Ruger level loads. Most recommend sticking to original BP level pressures but for sure don't attempt to use Marlin or Ruger level loads in it.

I think the same applies to modern repro rolling block guns as well but apparently not to copies of the Winchester High Wall Falling block gun.

When I got my petersoli sharps from cabela's a bunch of yrs ago I had the same question. I called cabela's and asked the about it. They told me to stick with the trapdoor loads or to use B/P loads
