Relieving yourself in the woods
« on: October 10, 2008, 06:55:53 PM »
I don't know how to approach this other than to throw it out.  Sometimes you just gotta go.  How do your control the scent when you have to relieve yourselves in the woods?  I would think the scent would stay around for quite a while and screw up deer patterns.

If you want to spend the day in the stand, how do you handle it?

Thanks,

Crabo

If you are talking about urinating don't worry about it. Urine is urine and in spite of claims to the contrary I'm convince deer don't have a clue what deposited it at least not after a few hours. It all breaks down rather quickly and after a short while smells pretty much the same regardless of what critter deposited it. In fact thru personal experimentation I can say that you can create your own "scrape" with your own urine that will be just as effective as that from a deer.

If on the other hand you are referring to defecation that's gonna stink regardless but again I am convinced deer cannot tell human feces from that of any other critter and all the wild critters go in the woods. I prefer not to have it very close to my stand but really I don't think it matters as far as your hunting succes is concerned. I'm convinced this is all an over blown non issue really.

I always carry some TP with me in the woods ;)

Some of us talked about this in another thread......it involved a bear too, but that's another story....

Urination, I just let it go wherever I'm standing at the time.  Deer pee smells worse than mine does.   :D

There's no way you can tell me that my crap smells any worse or affects deer anymore than a mangy dog coyote's crap or a coon or possum or any other animal that's been eating whatever nasty stuff they find.  When I need to go, I go.  My biggest worry is stepping in it later...  :o

I go away from any place that I might walk later, meaning trails and such.  Don't forget the TP, it stinks (pun fully intended) to ruin a nice camo shirt when you don't have anything else.   :-\  Yep, been there, done that.  My punk cousin that hunts with me thought it was so funny that he got some of those mini rolls of camper TP for christmas one year.  One day he forgot his TP.  I thought that it was really funny. I did NOT lend him mine.  That was even funnier.   ;D

If you're worried about the smell, most everyone carries/uses some kind of scent killer spray nowadays.  I'd think that soaking the "spot" with it would take care of the smell.

On the funny side of ths subj. Back in the middle 60's took a family friends son deer hunting for a couple days. You know the old picture of the guy in his long red long johns. Well this young lad had to ans. mother nature. Dropped his pants, undid the back of the long johns squatted down to do his thing. Bout then a nice 3 point steped out about 30 yrds away. He reached for his Win 30/30 and shot from the squatting position. You guessed it he rocked backwards and landed in what he had just done. He stated that he would never hunt with me again. (course I laughed all the way home and told everybody). P.S. He missed the deer.

I'm with Graybeard & the others. The only time I've carried a bottle was on a bear stand. I do on occasion hunt with a guy who is real anal about this. I try to accomodate when on his land but if there is no snow on the ground I do the 'don't ask, don't tell' policy.

Deer & Deer hunting did some studies years back by taking a leak right in the scrapes and it did not matter at all. They don't know the difference.

Most of you guys are NOT the best hunter in your household--far from it!  Likely, the absolute best hunter has a name something like Fluffy and spends most of his/her time curled up on your easy chair asleep.  Next time your housecat is outdoors, take careful notice of its behavior. A hunter can learn a lot about watching the old Fluffster outdoors.  Careful motion, looking around side to side, and back every few steps, and taking notice of all movement.  Taking full advantage of cover and concealment.  Sneaking up on  prey.  Seldom missing the mark.  When old Fluffy goes, he/she buries urine and or feces--not because it's so neat, but because evolution has caused Fluffy to be a very careful hunter--one of nature's finest. If I have to pee in the woods, I generally heelstomp a hole in the dirt, then kick dirt over it when I'm finished, kind of like my cat does. Or pee in a puddle of water. Crap before you go out in the woods so you don't have to go when you get there. It never hurts to be stealthy--even for you guys who think your crap smells sweet.  ;D

I usually pee by someone elses stand...j/k... Seriously though I usually look for a body of water like a ditch or a creek to pee in to dilute the scent...

I don't really have an opinion either way.  However, a couple of stories.  Last year, the first buck that my buddy took was right over a scrape that the buck was revisiting after my buddy peed on it earlier that morning.  It was a decent 8 pointer.

As for the next one...it's a hilarious story that is way too long to type here to tell all the details.  Short version, went hunting with my brother-n-law last year.  Half way up the pipeline, he couldn't hold it anymore and had to go take a dump about 20 yards into the woods - opposite side from where we were going to be hunting.  A couple of hours later, I end up shooting a deer in the pipeline.  It turns and runs into the woods on the other side and falls about ten yards from where he "relieved" himself earlier.  We weren't sure whether the deer dropped from my shot or from my brother-n-laws awful mess!  ;D  I had to drag it away before dressing it because the deer guts smelled better!  :o

In my experience, I don't think it matters but this is another one of those arguments like discussing knock down power.  It will never be settled to where everyone agrees.  :)

One time some friends and I were camping and hunting mule deer in New Mexico.  I very unwisely forgot to carry toilet paper one morning.  You guessed it, mother nature called while I was a long ways from camp.  Fortunately, I had some wool GI gloves which I could get replaced at the base for free.  This worked really well as I just peeled them off inside out.

Later, back at camp, my friend Dave walked in and said, "Hey Mark, did you lose something?"  And then he pulled from his coat pocket a pair of inside out GI gloves.....

When I told my pal what was inside those gloves, he threw them down just as fast as he could.  Lunch had a decidedly off-taste that day.  Later, the glove incident became one of the highlights of our hunting stories!

I agree with the bottle it theory, however if i am hunting near water, that works just as well.

This makes for around six of us now. I remember one televised study that broke the human urine contents down to what is basically almino-acids which may even attract deer!

I'd bet most of us guys would never own a cat.  I mean this is a gun and hunting site, not a cheese and whine site.   ;D

I don't know about you guys but my s..............I mean poop don't stink  ;D Howerver I don't do it in the woods where I'm hunting. i will however go in the middle of a field. I really don't think it makes a diffrence but I don't take the chance. Same goes with taking a #1 I won't do it from the tree I'm in but the middle of a field or a nice stream will do nicely. From what I have heard, read, and seen deer don't spook when they smell something they haven't before, they spook when they smell something they relate to danger.
God created man,Sam Colt made them equal.
