Mini 14 or Mini 30 ?

I have been considering buying a Mini 14 or Mini 30.  I want it for a truck/atv gun, but might want to take a deer or hog with it.  Who has which one, and which do you guys prefer?    Thanks!!

  If I'm thinking about taking a deer with one of them, it no doubt would be with the Mini-30.  I know, a lot of people think it's okay to shoot deer with a .223 and I am aware many have fallen to this round but I wouldn't want to shoot one with it.  I used to have the Mini-30 and it was sent to Accuracy (something or other) and was a good shooter.  Barrel was way heavy and good ammo. in this caliber isn't cheap.  Cor-Bon stuff rated for deer hunting is close to 30.00 a box. I never had any trouble with the rifle itself, though.  Some Rugers may not be the best in accuracy but you can't beat their reliability.

Looking at the Ruger site, I see it is available in a 6.8 spc.  Any input on this round? 

Also, do the mini 30, or the 6.8 have magazines available larger than 5 rnds?

I've had the mini 14 and 30 never was happy with accuracy of either, especially the 30 but they are supposed to be better now. If I where to get one now the 6.8 would be my pick

Do you know if there are magazines available for the mini 30, or 6.8 that hold more than 5 rounds?

Aftermarket mags for the Mini-30 are spotty in quality and function----Ruger makes no hi-caps for the 30.

6.8 is too new---nothin doin there.

Do you want a truck gun or assault rifle??

Truck gun---get the 30

If you want to blaze away ammo---get an AK47.

I really like my Mini 30, It serves me well in thick brush where I hunt.
I've used it on deer and hogs with very good results. It's not a tack driver but it will hold a 2 1/2 inch group with cheap ammo and 1 1/2 inch groups with reloads.
Plenty good for my normal hunting ranges.
It will how ever kill deer out to 300 yards and before anyone flames me for that the deer was already hit and headed for a nasty thicket.
I hardly ever hunt the open areas but on my way to my afternoon hunt we spotted a nice buck in the open. so the young hunter I had with me wanted to try for him.
Long story short he made a bad hit, and I finished the deal.
Before you call BS my first shot was a bit low and the deer tripped. Did I say a bit low well it plowed dirt at the bucks feet.

But it was in line, the next shot went through the shoulder and down he went.

Count me in as one who thinks "it's okay to shoot deer with a .223."

I started using the round in concert with a stainless Ruger Mini-14 Ranch Rifle the same year that Winchester introduced their 64 grain Power Point load in the caliber. Over the 20 plus years that have passed since then, most of the deer, mouflon sheep, and feral goats that I've killed have been felled with the .223 Remington.  All so far have been one-shot drops and most have been DRT (dead right there).  Those that haven't been DRT didn't trot more than 25 paces or so before piling up.  I can't fathom how any other cartridge would have killed these animals any deader with the same shot placement.  Even with the Power Points, most hits resulted in complete pass-through penetration.  On a 100 yard double-lung hit, the result is usually a caliber sized entrance wound, frothy pink goo where lung tissue used to be, and a two-times caliber hole going out.  My .30-30 would kill the same size game just as dead at the same distance, but it makes a fist sized or larger exit wound.

I was convinced that the .223 was enough cartridge for the deer hunting that I do under the conditions that I do it a long time ago and for me, the argument of whether or not the .223 is a "deer cartridge" was decided in the round's favor two decades ago.  The caveat is that most of the deer I kill are small blacktails and similarly sized whitetails and the common feature of the terrain I hunt upon is that none of it lends itself to long range shooting.  Virtually all of my shot opportunities come at ranges under 200 yards and most come at less than half of that distance.  On small deer at fairly close range, the .223 with proper bullets put in the proper place kills deer just as dead as anything else does.

While I was sold on the cartridge early on, I was not as enthusiastic about the suitability of the Mini-14 in that caliber as a "deer rifle."  I believe that the maxium range potential of the cartridge is greater than that of the rifle.  The .223 can deliver spectacular kills on smaller varieties of light, thin-skinned game, but it can only do so if the bullets are placed where they need to go in order to get those stellar results.  My Mini-14 was only precise enough to insure instant death as a foregone conclusion out to about 100 or 125 yards.

In my hunting, I found the .223 to be entirely adequate but I cannot say the same for the Mini-14.  I retired it within a few years of initial deer hunting service and replaced it with a T/C Contender Carbine with a custom 1:9 barrel in .223 as my backpacking blacktail rifle.  The .223 Contender Carbine is what I used to kill the majority of the deer (small sub 120 pound blacktails and whitetails) that I've taken.

I tried the Mini-14 as a deer rifle and found it lacking, but the limitations were all in the rifle and not the cartridge it was chambered to.

I used to own a mini-30, and I was not impressed.  It fed and functioned just fine, as long as you didn't think that you were gonna feed it Wolf ammo with the military primers.  It was plenty accurate enough to hit the broad side of a barn at 100 yards.  Mags for it were a bit spotty, stay away from any that are polymer, the only good ones are steel.

    Decide what you really will be doing with the rifle. Primarilly plinker, go 14, plinker that has to hunt to earn its keep hunting, go with mini 30 cause the ammo is still cheap and hunting loads will keep up with a 30-30. If hunting will be primary use with fun shooting as an aside the 6.8 is a more useful round. You won't have a beanfield gun but the round will have enough gas to work out in that field a couple hundred yds. My .02

I've owned both, and neither was very accurate.  With a scope they'd do maybe 4" groups at 100 yards with good commerical ammo.

I've shot both, and the ones I've shot were all lucky to do under 3"-4", scoped, at 100 yds.  That's good enough for shots at deer sized game out to 150yds or so.  If you're not going to shoot farther than that, get one and have fun.  These were older guns. 

In the last year Ruger has done some updates to the rifles and they are supposed to shoot much better now.  Barrels are a little bit stouter, the open sights are better, etc.  If you're interested in the 6.8SPC, this months Guns & Ammo shoots one if the Proof House test.

As for reliability, they're hard to beat.  Kind of like an SKS, throw it in the creek, pull it out a week or a month later, it'll still fire and cycle.

I took my mini 14 to the range.  It shoots about like everyone says, 3 - 4 inch groups at 100 yds.  I can live with that. 
A couple of weeks ago, I picked up a couple of 20 rd magazines, made out of metal, no brand name stamped anywhere. 
They do not extend far enough into the magazine for the bolt to pick up the rds. 
Should I do a little filing, or try to make them fit somehow?

I have a SKS with a plastic stock for a truck gun.  I don't worry about it getting beat up, and if something happens to it I'm not out much. fairly accurate and shoots the same ammo as the mini 30.
