Price of TC Encore and G2 Contender Pistols
« on: October 14, 2008, 11:12:48 AM »
I live in Ohio and I am looking at buying a pistol for deer hunting. I am considering buying an Encore or G2 Contender but I don't know what a new one would cost and I can't seem to find them at any of the sporting goods stores in my area. Can anyone help me out here? Also, does anyone prefer one over the other?

In trying to answer your question I can give you some info on price but may not be the same for your area. The Gun Digest list the G2 for 570.00 and the Encore for 670 to 689.00. I bought a new G2 44 mag from Dongs in Tulsa Ok. for 495.00 tax inc out the door. But I would suggest that you spend a couple bucks and call EdS contenders who is a sponser on the forum and he can give you a delivered price to your FFL dealer.
He is very fair on his prices and great to deal with. His number is listed on the forum.
The one thing you also need to know is what cal is permitted to hunt dear in Ohio with a hand gun.
In Oklahoma we have a bullet weight and also a case length in order for it to be ok to hunt with.
The next thing for you to think about is the weight factor. The G2 is much lighter than the Encore in weight and also the G2 can use the same barrels as the older contenders. The Encore with a 15 inch barrel is a hand full and then add a scope and for me it becomes very heavy and you almost have to have a rest to use it.I think that from what I read on the forum that the 7-30 waters would be a good choice but again that is my opinion. 30-30 would be a good choice but has more recoil than the 7-30. For my own personal liking I prefer the later easy open contenders over the G2 for the weight factor and I for one like the cat on the side. :) :) Let me also state for every ones info that I do own all three. Contender, G2, and Encore.9 to be exact. That is my TCW.  :) :) :) Others will give you theirs and with alls help you will have the info. that you need.

There's a dealer, Miller's something or other, located in Sugarcreek, Holmes County that has a handful of frames, barrels and furniture.  I haven't dealt with these people but was in the store for the first time last week.  Prices didn't seem to out of line.  Personally I prefer the Contender.

I like the Encore for the really heavy hitters as the extra weight really helps in the recoil dept. But for ease or use and shootability the Contender gets the knod. I would check out the 30-30AI or any of the JDJ calibers. If you don't reload then I would opt for the 35 Rem. 30-30win or the 7-30 waters  if your regulations require a straight wall case then I would look at the .375 win  or the 44 mag  the .445super mag if you reload. just my .02 hope it helps you out.

The older contenders were very nice to shoot but the G2 setup seems to be an overall improvement. The Encore is heavy and stands up to heavy loads in monster calibers. It seems to me that there is always a trade off when it comes to making the choice. The reason I jumped in here is because you mentioned pricing. I just bought a complete blued Encore for $400 off GunBroker. Now I thought that was a bargin. Since then I have found like new Encore frames for about $200 on this site! I saw one Encore barrel go for 100 bucks! If price is a concern and you are not in a rush, why not shop on this site. I have found better deals and better availability here than anywhere else I have tried. Also if you post a WTB, the friendly people here will probably help you get what you want and need. Just a thought, good luck  :)
