I'm not an Alaskan, but here is my take on it...in certain area's the wolves population has increased to the point that they are decimating big game, particularly moose. Moose meat is much sought after by residents for substanance. Wolves also kill for sport, increasing the toll on moose. The wolves are smart, can be difficult to trap or shoot. In order to control the wolf population, in certain area's, Gov. Palin authorized the control shooting of wolves from planes. I don't know if anyone can do it, or only certain people ( game agents??).
In the past, it has been proposed before, but animal rights groups opposed it, threatening tourist boycotts, and officials backed down.
The way I understand it, in Denali National Park ( where, of course, no hunting/shooting of any kind is allowed ) the wolf population has increased to the point were moose are seldom seen anymore, which demonstrates the need to apply control measures where needed.
To me, it's a no-brainer. The only "proplem" is the public has romanticized wolves to a cult status, making it a knee-jerk topic.
