corn smut
« on: January 09, 2009, 04:02:07 AM »
We can't seem to grow corn in our garden without getting a lot of smut. We even layed off trying for 10 yrs, but once again, nearly every ear had smut. Anybody know something that will prevent it?

It has been my experience that some varieties get smut worse than others. You might try planting a different variety. I have been using INCREDIBLE for the last several years and haven't had much trouble with it. If you have a garden center close, you might talk to someone who works there and they might be able to help you. Or you might contact your county extension office and ask for help.

Try talking to your county Agricultural extension agent. They are usually connected with your sate university in what ever state you are in and would have some inside information as to what kind of corn would be best in your area to avoid the smut.
