223 Sight In Question
« on: October 19, 2008, 01:08:02 PM »
I am shooting 223 w/23 inch barrell G2.  If I am 2 inches high at 100, where "should" I be at 50?

Since you don't give bullet weight, velocity, how high your scope is from the center line of the bore if using a scope, you are probably going to have to move up to 50 yards take a good rest and shoot the darn thing.
Harry

Sorry guys I just see way to much of this stuff on the boards.
Well bye then

Put your data in the correct boxes and hit calculate. This will give you a close approximation of what you ask. YOU will still need to shoot at the ranges to VERIFY the results. this will be close enough for govt. work though!

Sorry Harry1 that I insulted your intellegence.  You could have just not replied.  I did not know I needed to check with you prior to posting a question.  But you must be god or something.  I simply am trying to understand the relationship of the bullet path and sight path or what ever you call it.  I do appreciate jhalcott's response.  The link you posted is exactly the type of help I needed.  By the way, I am going to the range.  I just bought the 223 and look forward to lots of shooting.

I would spend the extra effort to shoot at both distances to actually see the difference. There are too many variables, especially scope height.

I think you are being a bit too sensitive in your reaction to Harry's response. He is merely telling you the facts of life with a bit of editorializing added.

There is just no way to correctly answer your question and only by shooting it can you know. Sure you can play the ballistics computer game but it really will not be any closer to right than a wild guess would be.

What I can tell you based on a lot of experience with a lot of rounds is that with almost any centerfire round you need to be low at 25 to be 100% sure of even being on an 8.5"x11" target sheet at 100 yards. If you are XX number of inches or fractions thereof high at 100 yards you'll be something less than that high at 50. For a more definitive answer you really must put it on paper to know. Ballistic calculators are cute to play with but if you really want to know you must shoot it to see.

That's just the facts of life and getting pissed off at folks for telling it to you just shows immaturity and/or a lack of understanding on your part.

Graybeard,
Thanks for your input.  Lack of education on the subject, certainly.  Lack of maturity, don't go there.  You have no idea who I am.  I am simply looking for a little info from experts like yourself.  I always put it on paper and will this time as well.  I have always owned big bore rifles.  This is the first time I have ever owned a "varmit" gun.  Again, thanks for everyones advice.

I said one or the other as yes I don't know you so had no way of knowing which was the driving force. It can be difficult to tell at times which is the driver in these internet discussions until we learn more about a person.

I also play with ballistics programs, but they seam to differ from actual field results.

That's how the a lot of discussions start or end up on forums is people regurgitating ballistic table results.

It always best to shoot and practise at the actual ranges you think you might be hunting.
