Remington 700 ML misfire

My father-in-law has a Remington 700 ML which he uses the large musket caps.  He has had mutiple misfires this year including two at deer.  He may go through several caps before it will go off.  He has used two different containers of caps so it isn't a bad batch.  He feels as if the firing mechanism isn't striking the primer hard enough.  Has anyone had similar problems with this particular ML.

Try dissassembling the bolt.  Check the spring to see if the spring is in good shape and clean of powder or rust.  Its important to clean these springs.  Have heard of a few springs that needed to be replaced to fix this issue.  Know of at least one individual who replaced with a spring from the 209 conversion kit while still shooting no 11 caps.  I clean mine on every cleaning and have had no issues.

The factory spring in a Remington 700ML is notoriously weak - especially as it gets older.  Another must for the 700 is the bolt must be disassembled and cleaned each time the gun is cleaned. If this has not been done it will accelerate the deterioration of the hammer spring....  This is the spring you need to replace the factory spring....

I shoot #11 caps but have had several misfires due to some caps being too small. German brand caps are hard to push plumb down so firing pin sets it first hit and pops it on second hit. This cost me the biggest buck of my life last year before I figured out what was wrong. Shoot Remington caps now and have no problem. Hopefully by ML season will have it replaced with a new T/C.

I had issues with the #11 Remington Caps.  I replaced the nipple and cleaned out the bolt.  Fires without hesitation.

I bought a blue 700 ML the first year they came out. I took the bolt apart and cleaned it after each day of shooting. The third year I owned it after shooting a deer one day and hunting with it the next day I got a misfire on a 10 point I recocked it and fired again and fortunately got him. I reloaded and the next day it did the same thing on a doe. I did some experimenting and it would only fire a cap with a cleaned oiled bolt.
If i fired my 5 caps before loading and waited a day there was enough fouling to hold up the firing pin. I bought the 209 conversion kit which has all stainless parts and have had no problems since. I felt like Remington should have replaced the defective original firing pin and spring for free.

I learned that the bolt must be taken apart and cleaned after each session at the range or after fireing it when hunting.
I bought this tool at Gander Mountian for $10.00. It is indespencable and I feel should have came with the rifle to start with.


Also when useing the # 11 caps make sure you have a nipple in very good condition.

 I also learned that I should never ever oil the striker as it will freeze up in very cold weather.
Since I started useing dry slide and cleaning every time I have had zero miss, hang fires with either of my Remingtons.

If you are going to do the 209 Conversion, get the kit from Cabela's and not the one made by Remington.  You don't need the tool to disassemble the bolt.  I've done it many times without the tool.

I have had the exact same problems with remington ML700 using musket caps. The stock spring in mine was too weak. I put the No. 11 nipple back on and have had no problems.

my 700ML started taking two whacks of the hammer to set off musket caps or no.11's last year. lucky i found out in the summer well before season. replaced the spring with the WC Wolff spring from gunsprings.com and it was better than new. the standard spring was getting weak.

I thought I was the only one left who owns one of these beasts. Mine is a blue 50 cal that I bought when they first came out. I have never converted it to 209, $50 will buy alot of caps. So far I've been really lucky not to have had a missfire during hunting. The problem I have is tying to get a cap on. With a scope mounted its hard to get my fingers in there to install a cap. A capper may solve the problem?
