Rare Field Artillery piece FOUND!!
« on: October 22, 2008, 03:48:06 PM »
During our travels this fall, Mike and I located a most unusual field artillery gun at a very significant location.  Does anyone recognize this piece and know it's story and location?

M&T

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets
It's only the pick of the Army that handles the dear little pets - 'Tss! 'Tss!

Maybe a 6-pounder wrought-iron Griffen gun in Phoenixville, PA?

Thanks, John, right you are and here are a few more photos that expand a little on the very important site for Federal ordnance building during the Civil War.  Approx. 1,400 Ordnance Rifles were turned out here during the war.  Using the lessons learned in developing the Griffin gun, the Phoenix Iron works used hammer welded wrought iron to make a superior rifled gun.  Also displayed in the small Phoenixville park, the the bronze 1841 6-pdr field gun in a special glass enclosure and an original Ordnance Rifle along with the partially finished Griffin gun.

Regards,

Mike and Tracy

This photo shows the front of a new museum which is being built right now which will feature the Phoenix Iron Company and it's entire story from the Civil War to the 20th Century.  Should be complete in January we believe.

No we ARE NOT BITTER and Yes we still cling to both of these!  We were in eastern Penn. around Philly a couple days ago and we are slowly winding our way home, trying not to miss anything.  Can anyone guess which region our hotel room is in?

Boy, are you guys ever sharp tonight!  Not bad, intoodeep.  We are only 40 north and 15 west of Somerset, PA.  Mike and I were both taught years ago that a man should keep the people and things that are important to him close at hand.  We both try to do this with our families AND our tools.

The Glock IS closer than the remote; it's a simple matter of priorities.

Western PA is really beautiful country and the people here are very friendly and helpful to travelers; we like them!
