270 oal problems
« on: October 21, 2008, 03:50:41 PM »
I just bought a 270 mossberg 100 atr and started trying to come up with a load for it. I bought a box of 150 grn hornady sp, and looked in my lyman manual, it lists the cartridge oal at 3.285. I have a jug of h414 around so i planned to use that. to find where the lands begin on this rifle i seated a bullet about half way into the brass, leaving it way too long, chambered the round, and measured it. The round measures 3.245..... ??? hmm what to do. I measured and chambered a factory round, remington 150 gr sp rd cor lokts, they stayed the same length and measure at 3.242. Anybody know of a good 150 gr or 130gr bullet that i can use in a short throat rifle.

Lyman, as you know, uses a universal receiver to do their testing for the .270 Win. and the OAL they come up with is what works best in their receiver. Looking at the Hornady Loading manual, their C.O.L. for the same bullet, 150 gr. SP #2740, is 3.210".
Their testing for the .270 Win. is with a Winchester Model 70.
Got to remember that these numbers are guidelines, provided by these tests. Your results will vary.

I've got five and none of them are the same.

For what it's worth, The Hornady 6th Edition does not include H-414 in their list of 11 powders tested on the bullet you mentioned. ;)
