Tell me what you think of this.
I was kicking around ideas after Busta told me the NEF plug was
too shallow to just drill out for 25ACP so I began to look at the
dimensions of it all and it turns out that a fine thread 7/16" bolt
with a hex head would be the perfect insert for a later model
5/8" breechplug.
1st step would be to drill and tap the NEF plug for the 7/16" bolt.
2nd would be to drill and tap some heavy stock in the same
thread size to screw the 7/16 bolt into prior to reaming to 25ACP
dimensions of .277
The existence of the hex head will be very convenient for fine
adjustment of the head space of the 25ACP when the action
is closed. This could be important for the sealing characteristics
of the 25 ACP round. Unfortunately my belief is that the 25ACP
will only accept small rifle and pistol primers. IF true, we
still have a problem getting enough fire to the Blackhorn 209 powders.
Perhaps if the seal is improved enough, we could tolerate
a larger flash hole to allow more fire into the main gunpowder
charge.
I think these operations should be very simple and elementary
for a machinist and maybe even a home hobbiest with a miniature
lathe. This may be old news but I havent heard the use of 7/16"
bolt as off the shelf material that would be the perfect size
and very cheap.
