JJ, Opinion Please.........

JJ,

I have always heard that the most wanted Lion trophy is a "Full Black Maned Lion Over 10 feet".  The other day I was at the home of one of my clients(first time there) and he had a Lion rug that his uncle had taken on a safari 12 years ago.  What really caught my eye was the mane on this Lion was lighter in color than the rest of the body.  Almost an ash blonde in color.  My question is this, "is this rare for Lions and what is the rarest color a Lion may be"?  Lawdog

I don't know what the rarest of lion colors is. I know that most of the darker ones are from Tanzania and the ligher ones from further south like Zambia, Zimbabwe, and RSA. I also have seen all colors from all areas but the darker maned lions seem to be from further north.

Funny now that I think of it I have seen a number of light maned lions from the Kalahari region of Botswana and Namiba. Do you know where this lion was killed?

JJ,

No I don't know where it was taken but I will find out.  Of all the pictures of Lions and the live ones seen in movies, zoos and such I have never seen one with such a light color mane.  Of all the trophies that his uncle took that Lion really stood out.  Lawdog
