Jack Russells, anyone?
« on: August 10, 2003, 04:40:45 AM »
Howdy,

After years of Labrador and GSP ownership, I'm downsizing.
I've got one male and likely to add three more as time and training allows.  I'm pleasantly surprised at the intelligence and a bit dismayed at the energy level.

Anybody else?
Adios,

Big Hext,

Hunted with Jack Russells for over 20 years.  Have done Red Fox, Raccoon, Woodchuck, Opposum  and Badger.  Hunted in Great Britain eight times with JRT's, Patterdales, Lakeland and Border Terriers.

Recently returned from the Nationals in Tennessee and worked with JRT's for 3 days on Woodchucks (groundhogs).

Have plenty of photos, articles and video-tape if you are interested..... :-)

RB,

I'd be grateful for any insight and information you could share.
I find myself really enjoying my JRT, but the breed does not have the kind of "roots" that the Labs have..

Adios,
Hext

Big Hext,

Not sure what you mean by "roots"?  The breed goes back about 150 years and was bred originally to work with a fox-hound pack on basically all day hunts.  Was used also by the "common terrierman" for badger work and is still used extensively in this country.

Hard to believe that a 15 lb. dog can take on a 30+lb. badger, but then again they have to be clever workers.

Send me a private message with your address and I will send you a book that I wrote,  "Foxes Yet Unseen".  Hopefully will give some insight into JRT's and working terriers.

RB, Gracias!

I sure would appreciate the book.

I mean roots by the organizational structure and the enthusiasts who enjoy and promote the breed.  When I began to look for my dog, finding bloodlines and performance histories was pretty challenging.

So maybe the right word was structure.  And I think it is building.  I'm very pleased with the methodology of the JRTCA.

Thanks again.
Hext
