I hate questions like this...
« on: October 19, 2008, 12:51:33 PM »
but I'm going to ask it anyway. LOL.

I'm considering replacing both my Lyman Great Plains 54 cal sidelock ML and my NEF Handirifle in 375 Win with one modern inline ML for use in both seasons.  Why?  I don't really like the wedges that hold the traditional sidelocks together and I like the ease of cleaning that a removable breech plug will give.  The money for a new inline kinda hurts the wallet, so I started thinking along the lines of a replacement gun for both seasons.

Complications:  I like wood stocks (Laminated stocks OK) and I'm a lefty.  I'd like to have a stainless barrel for corrosion resistance, but if I change from holy black to some of the newer non-corrosive powers, that starts to be a non-issue too.

I looked at some of the high end rifles like the Savage ML10.  Initially I was turned off because they are right hand bolt actions but that really doesn't matter in a ML does it?  There's no quick followup shot to worry about anyway.

What would be your choice?

i like the CVA Accura. It doesnt have a wood stock but hey, its not a cheap flexy synthetic stock like a lot of the competition uses.  Comes with a high quality barrel too.

I have a CVA Optima, nickel/camo and its a darn nice rifle and shoots just about anything.

I am more into traditional rifles that shoot modern projectiles so its a coin toss for me.

There are only a couple still in production I'd even consider.

Knight Long Range Hunter

Savage 10MLBSS-II

If you live in a state that allows smokless powder in muzzleloading season, I'd get the Savage.  If not then it doesn't matter which one.

Quality cost money, don't scrimp........

I have a Encore with a 209x50 barrel and a 243 barrel I use blackhorn 209 powder in the muzzleloader with great results.

Yes, $80 cheaper there than Midway but I'd have to pay sales tax in the order of $33 but won't have to pay shipping of 10 or 20 dollars so I suppose they pretty much offset each other .  I'll check at the local pawn shop tomorrow.  He will order anything and has pretty good pricing.

The "left handed" part of this rifle is a palm swell and the safety is turned around.  The bolt is still on the right side.

Buds wants $599 for the Savage Stainless 10ML with the realtree camo stock and $566 for the Knight Long Range Hunter with stainless barrel and green laminate wood stock.  The Savage appears to be geared more toward smokeless with a 24" barrel while the Knight has a 27" barrel since it's restricted to Black and the substitute powders.

The stock is shaped for a lefty, but the bolt is still right handed. I doubt this is much of a problem for a ML. I really like the GM barrels Knight uses, as they seem to handle all projectiles pretty well. I shoot a TC Encore which is available with wood. You can even buy LH laminated thumbhole stocks for a very reasonable price. I own a TC Omega with a LH TH Rosewood stock. Awsome ML. Just be forewarned that TC's are picky about bore-size conicals.

I have the Savage M10 1 and I would highly recommend it.I don't usually use it because I prefer the conventional type. With either black powder or one of the substitutes its deadly at 100 yards.I have never experimented with smokeless powders because the others work so well.

You can get the Knight Rolling Block in blue finish with a walnut stock that looks very NICE.  Granted, it isn't stainless, but it sounds exactly like what you're looking for....  a modern ML that's lefty friendly with a wood stock.  Last time I saw it at Bass Pro in Cincinnati, I think it was $389 or $399.  RR Arms on-line has really good prices on most ML's as well, cheaper than most of the big name retailers.  I bought my blued/comp Rolling Block (I don't have it anymore) there for $280 shipped.

I would look at Gunbroker.com, if you have patients you can seal the deal on some good steals.

I have seen new walnut/blued T/C 209x50 Encore's that have sold for under $400.

Plus you have the options to add extra barrels in the future if desired.

I loved the original Contender pistol, but the Encore just looks like a pistol that's been converted to a rifle.  I'd rather have a rifle myself.

I've decided on the Savage 10ML II w/ the laminate stock.  Now I just have to raise the cash.  Hopefully maybe by the second ML season coming in December.

just a silly thought, but why not send in the handoi receiver and have the 26 inch barrel fitted to it?  It would be as good of a shooter as the knight or any of the others.  Still have the wood stock and much cheaper.
