Contender + 12 ga slug barrel?
« on: November 25, 2008, 12:08:25 PM »

Done all my TC shooting w/handgun barrels and need to ask you long-stock shooting folks a question or two.

Ive got an opportunity to hunt white-tailed deer in a short-range weapons hunt, that allows shotgun slugs to be used.  I was wondering if there are any 12ga rifled barrels that are/were made for the contender frame?  If so I'd appreciate knowing a source for purchasing one of them.

If the answer to the above is "sorry...no can do" then I would like to know if the G2 or Encore can be purchased complete with a 12ga rifled barrel?  Or, do I have to buy the stock, frame and barrel separately?

Thanks,
Silvertp

you can not use a 12 ga on the contender g1 or g2 I think the biggest shotgun you can find for the contender is a 28 ga.

The encore on the other hand you can get a 12 ga slug barrel. I have a 12 ga smooth bore for my encore and it shoots shot great but slugs are not overly bad but not great.
I also have a 20 ga slug barrel for my encore and it is a great deer hunting barrel as long as shots are under 100 yards. less recoil then the 12 and just as deadly on deer.

Rickyp....Thanks.  Thats what I sorta expected regarding the contender and 12ga.  Not compatable.

Too late this year as season is nearly over, but will probably be looking to set up an Encore w/slug bbl for next fall.  Does hastings or anyone else make 12 ga slug bbls for the Encore, or is it strictly a Thompson Center product?

I think only T/C makes them you may be able to talk a custom barrel maker into making one for you but why you will not gain much for the extra money and time

Do not overlook the 20 ga slug barrel. the new 20 ga sabots are just as good as the 12 with less recoil and the shells are a Little cheaper as well.

check out ed's tcs he may have a barrel ready to go out.

If you are going to buy an encore frame you  should think hard about getting a handgun frame instead of a rifle frame. they are the exact frame but they are reported to the BATF as a ether a handgun or rifle. If you get a handgun frame you can make it into anything you want and back to a handgun however if you buy a rifle frame you can never make it into a handgun, Then if you ever decide to sell the frame. the handgun frames are more desirable and will sell a lot faster.

Rickyp... Thanks for the tip on the encore "pistol" frame.  Sounds like that is the way to go.

Guess I'll do some looking into the ballistics for a 20 ga slug.  Guess I never considered a 20 as I figured bigger is better, but then again, whitetails are not that large an animal and a well placed round is more important than the ft/lbs of energy.

Thanks again!

be honest with you once a bullet exits the the target what ever energy that is remaining is useless.

In last months American hunter they have an article about new sabots slugs they conpair the modern 20 ga slug to a 45-70

This was taken right from the Remington  box
The 20 ga Remington copper solid slugs: has 1500 fps and 1444 ft lbs at the muzzle, then at 100 yards it has a 3.1" drop (with a 50 yard zero) and is going 1240 FPS and has 986 ft lbs of energy. This is more then enough for a deer
