american pioneer powder/ powder ideas
« on: October 31, 2008, 01:28:46 AM »
I shot two shots with it yesterday 3 sticks one shot low and the other high. like a good 8 inches apart. The sticks where hard to get down the barrel. My encore barrel isn't square has anyone else had this problem? What power does you guys encores like with a 250gr bullet? how many grains are you shooting?

The limited experience I have had with "sticks" is that they are quite different from stick to stick and the weights or them vary. Personally I have little use for "sticks" or pellets. Loose powder is just as easy to use and a lot more reliable from load to load. Also the ability to fine tune the charge is better for me.  Usually I shoot fairly heavy bullets 300gr. and up and my loads of various sub powders range from 80 to 90 grains.

My advice it to chunk the sticks and go to Jim Shockey Gold granular or Goex Pinnacle 3F.  Goex Pinnacle is made by Pioneer Powder but it is more powerful.  Have killed several deer and many hogs using JSG and the 250 grain SST/Shockwave bullet.  The powder load was 90-110 grains of JSG.

Am currently using 110 grains of Goex Pinnacle along with the .40 200 grain Shockwave in my Encore.  That is an accurate load.

A nice thing about American Pioneer Powder, JSG and Pinnacle is the easy cleanup.  The breech plug is much easier to remove.

Buddy of mine tried the Jim Shockey Gold Sticks and it was absolutely terrible. His groups went from 2 inches to 2 feet with some shots not even hitting the target at all. Plus the sticks wouldnt burn completely, chunks would fly out the barrel and lay on the groung smoking, looked like little roman candles comin out the end of the barrel.   :D
