Taylor Firearms question
« on: September 24, 2008, 03:41:26 PM »
I saw a nice 1885 high wall in 38-55 and am very interested.  Does anyone out there have any info regarding the quality, accuracy etc?
They retail for around $850 to over $1,000.

I'm guessing that the rifle is made by Uberti as the only other spagetti highwall that I know of is made by Pedersoli and is much more costly than that. Plus ithas just started to be imported.

That being said, I have a Uberti .38-55 highwall that I could not get to shoot a group no matter what I tried. The bore is too big --.384 groove diameter. This is common with the Uberti .38-55's. Some folks get a good one occasionally but most do not. Uberti takes the stand that thier guns are suitable for CAS.

I have had a Green Mountain barrel on back order for two months. I gave up on the Uberti Barrel.

The action is very good and the wood is above standard grade on most of them. I expect to have a nice rifle when I get it rebarreled for about the same money that one could rebarrel an original action.

Howdy Pard  :D

I think Taylors sells the Pedersoli brand, the rifle you saw may have been a Pedersoli High Wall
Model S.804, or S.805, this is a beautiful Rifle, just like all the Pedersoli line of Quality Firearms, if this is the one your looking at, I'd say jump on it. As far as being accurate, if it has the Pedersoli barrel on it, which it does, it will be a tact driver. I'm thinking of getting one myself, to go along with with my Sharps, you can also go to E.M.F. this is where I got my Sharps, good people.

Pedersoli has not brought their High Wall into the USA as yet. The Taylor is a uberti as far as I know.

I got some interesting information from Taylors. While this is a high wall design and one would think it capable of high cups, it is rated only at 28,000 according to Taylors.  I would have thought that it would at least shoot up to 40,000.  Of course it could be "lawyer speak" as well. In any event I am dissapointed that if they are being truthful, the will only do conventional "old time" 38-55 pressures.
