I've used patch bullets in my 45-70 SSK T/C and at 150 yards I get 5" groups with a 535 postell paperpach, and have taken 2 deer with it and never had to track one, they just droped.

Got three deer last year with my patched loads. So far this year has been dry. Headed to Alabama in two weeks and will update then.

I read an old article in Handloader about how factory pistol bullets swaged for pistols can sometimes be perfect for Paper Patching. I bought a bunch of Speer 250 SWC [soft lead] bullets at 0.451-452". PERFECT for patching to 458-460".
Result? 8 pt with NEF 45/70 taken at only 30 yards. Bullet entered rear of chest cavity [actually entered gut area but went into back of diaphram only 3 to 5 " down the bullet path] and exiting the chest,,entering the elbow of the front left leg where I found it just under the hide!
Perfect mushroom. Looks like a quarter and almost as flat. I still have ithe bullet if you want to see a picture of PAPER PATCHED PERFECTION!

Sorry for the delay.
I have a tool that putsa cannelure onto the bullet. I use a Lee Factory crimper to crimp the mouth into the cannelure.
The crimp is only 'moderate',and does not destroy any accuracy.
I only crimp hunting rounds,and only use new brass for hunting. It works just fine.
