4759 powder uses
« on: October 26, 2008, 04:50:40 PM »
I just got a 5# can of 4759 and want some loading recipe's for it. Any one out there have any? I have many different calibers to choose from and cast for many of them, if that helps.

I use SR4759 in my 30-30 with cast at less than hunting velocity. 180gr lead bullet with 14-16gr of 4759 gives a very accurate load that will clock between 1500 and 1600 fps. Very easy on the budget and fun to shoot. I'd say its on a par with 5744 for cast loads at medium velocity. I use Reloader 7 when I want to push cast a little harder but am really getting to enjoy plinking and target shooting with 4759. The barrel doesn't heat up like a hunting load, so you can just keep shooting the tin can till its only a memory.

That's the kind of info I'm looking for, thanks. I posted before I looked thru my cast bullet manuals. I found a lot of data there on 4759 in a whole bunch of calibers. None of them are earth shaker loads but seem to be great for plinking ammo. I was thinking of the 7TC/U and 45-70 among others when I got the powder. At the levels I've seen ,the brass SHOULD last forever. I just hope I'll be able to get WW's for casting!

Believe it or not but many years ago while looking for a light plinking and target load for the 22-250, an old timer shared his load using sr 4759 and 55 grain sierra bullets which I was using. Was 18grs sr 4759 and everything else the same as I was using in full power loads. They would 3 shot 1/2 at 100 yards which was the farthest I ever shot them, and were right in line with full power loads but dropped around 3-4 inches lower. Very pleasant to shoot paper with.

SR4759 works well for me as a recreational shooting powder for .308 Win - based cartridges:

.243 Win - 20 to 23 grains behind 80 grain bullets

7mm-08 Rem - 23 grains behind 120 and 130 grain bullets

.358 Win - 26.5 grains behind 200 grain bullets

My experience has been that it works best with bullets on the lighter-side of a caliber's normal bullet weight range

Pleasant to shoot, good accuracy - can't ask for much more.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.
