What do you want to know?  Look under the crane and let us know the dash number (if there is one).  If you want to know the age, a serial number of the form 123xxx would be good.

I had a Model 57 a long time back with the 8 3/8" barrel.  I didn't shoot it much because that beautiful box sort of implied I had to keep it pristine.  My thought would be to get rid of the box and enjoy shooting the revolver.

For sure, a dandy revolver! As for the 5" barrel, it is not a stock item, but was either a custom order, or someone thought Elmer Kieth knew more than most and emulated his preference by having the barrel lobbed at the 5" mark. I'm sure it doesn't hurt the value or the way it shoots, and for sure packs easier than a 6". I agree, forget the box and shoot it, with delight!

Sounds like a very nice gun.  I have two 4 in Smiths, a 57 and 657 MG.  Sometimes I've wished for a little more barrel but not 6 inches.  Shoot it, enjoy it.  Love those 41s.

Looks like 657 (dash nada) was made in 1986.  They were made in those first few years with 4", 6" and 8 3/8" barrels, so your measurement is either a fluke, or the barrel shortened later, or it was a custom order.  A bit later they dropped the 4".
