45 colt loads with H110
« on: October 26, 2008, 08:22:11 PM »
Hey guys I have a ruger blackhawk with 4 5/8 barell in 45 colt.  I've just recently bought a chronograph, and have been testing my loads so far.  I've been pretty pleased with the results I've been getting the the short barell.

300 Gr. XTP with 22.0 gr. of H 4227                 250 Gr. XTP with 20.0 gr. of #2400
Avg. Vel. was 1072 fps                                  Avg. Vel. was 1122
Extreme spread was 48 fps                             Extreme spread was 81 fps

I'm looking for loads with the 300 gr. xtp with H 110, I have some data for it with 250 gr. but havn't tested them yet.  I'd like to get around 1150 or 1200 with the 300 gr. xtp's if possible with the short barrel.  xtp's are about the only thing I can find around here, and they are relatively cheap here.  But my manuals just about all use 296 with the 300's.  Thanks for any help guys and good luck this year.

296 and 110 are the same powder. The burning rates can vary a tad but its due to lot to lot consistancys.

I don`t think you`ll safely get those velosicities. My Sierra manual list 1,100 fps. has top velosicities with a 7 1/2 in. barrel and your will be a little under that.

I managed to get what speed I was lookin for today with H 110.  The 300's went around 1150 or 1160, and the 250's actually made it to 1273.  I din't think i'd be able to get these speeds but I did.  May load them down a little bit kick was pretty sharp.  And the deer here in NE Mississippi aren't the biggest around lol

In the Hodgdon manual 26th edition under Silhouette Loads under 45 colt with a 7" test barrel with 300 grain bullets it lists a max load of H110 as 23 grains for a vel. of 1330 fps with 30,000 cup.
The starting load is 21.5 grain for a vel. 1109 with 24,400 cup.
He should have no problem getting 1150 to 1200 fps and still be below max.

WARNING!---Just remember not to use these loads in any gun weaker than a RUGER or FREEDOM ARMS.

Sounds like your gun has alittle less gap between the cylinder and barrel than most of them do. BUT like you said that is just a tad more than you need for those little deer you have down there.  ;D

I have the same set up as you, Ruger blackhawk with 4 5/8 barrel.  Try some Hodgdon Lil' Gun.  The loads are some of the most accurate loads for my gun and you can get the velocities you are looking for with lower pressures. I have shot both the 250 & 300 XTP's with this powder.  The 250 gr. is the one I shoot the most and I can get 1200 fps with the starting load.

Yes, there will be recoil!

Check out Hodgdon's site, there is load data there.

Thanks for the help guys.  I'll try the lil gun, right now I have universal, and green dot for lighter loads to practice with.  And i have #2400, H4227, and H 110 now.  H 4227 so far seems to not burn as clean as some of the other powders I have.  Is the Lil gun pretty clean?  Also can any of you recommend a good lead swc or similar for just target shooting, the cheaper would be better.  Any ways thanks guys  and good luck this season.

I've shot H110 behind 300gr bullets for good results. Heavy recoil though. Lil'gun behind 255 LSWC is pretty good accuracy wise. Recoil ain't near as bad but not something I'd want to shoot daily, but that may just be me. I tried H110 with the 255s and didn't like the results. H110 and 296 works best when ya can get the case filled. I've tried H4227 and IMR4227. Dirty, nasty and didn't burn all the way. I threw away about half a pound of it. I've been told to try 2400. The folks, doing the telling, swear by it and can't believe I've not tried it yet. I've been shooting 231 with 250s or 255s on a regular basis. The recoil is low enough that my 14yr old niece shoots it and hits what she's aiming at regularly. Unique is a good powder also.

If i had to pick the powder that has done the best for accuracy in the 45 colt with bullets 255-320 it would be 4227 hands down. It is a little dirtier then some but i could care less if it shoots small groups. AA9 would run a close second. I dont use lilgun at all any more. It is a finiky powder when you get up to max loads and goes from no pressure signs to pounding out brass with a 1/2 grain increase. It also is about the worst powder when it comes to throat errosion. Taffin said it and i have to agree. A gun that wont shoot  20 grains of 4227 with 255 well wont shoot good with that bullet with any powder charge.

I wouldn't set velocity as a primary goal, it's a very bad habit.  I always shoot for accuracy first then, after I pick a load, I chronograph it.  I have shot all 3 .45 XTP's and for deer you cannot beat the 250XTP in front of some Lil Gun, I use 23.5 grains.  Good Luck!

You are using H-110 to it full potential.

I have a Ruger Blackhawk 45 Colt with 5 1/2" barrel.

I use H-110 with CCI 350 primers, its a perfect match.

I load hard cast lead bullets from Cast Performance and Leadhead.

As yopper said 110 is fine choise and 350s are the primer to use with it. I dont use it much anymore. Ive got enough surplus 820 to last me for years and its was a hell of alot cheaper. You are using H-110 to it full potential. cast performance is another good bullet maker. I know mike personaly and can vouch for the fact that he is trying to put out a first class product.

Thanks guys, I'm gonna look into the cast bullets thing when I get some extra time.  Right now all of my powders are doing good.  H4227 is dirty but it shoots some good groups with 300 gr. xtp.  The reason I was wanting to try some h 110 was to gain some speed.  Because with the H 4227 at 25 yards the 300 gr. xtp's would shoot about 3 inches high and I ran out of adjustment with my sights, I can't remember if it was a max load or not, if I can remember it was around 18.5 or 19.0 gr.  This was the first powder and bullet I had when I started reloading for this caliber, so I was a little worried about maxing it out then.
