what barrel would you get?
« on: October 28, 2008, 03:49:41 PM »
i have just sold several barrels to buy a new one.  ill be using nearly 100% for deer hunting, and i need a gun i can shoot out to 300 yards, if i need to, but not any further.  i am not handloading atm, so a cal with plenty of factory ammo is good.  im thinking a .308 or a 25/06.  the only other thing i would use it for is maybe shooting foxes or coyotes, at the same ranges.  i know i could use nearly any cal would work for this, but if it were you, what would yo choose?
I've got to many but never enough!!!!

i would go with the 25-06. if you want to hunt the smaller animals as well as deer. the 25-06 is really flat shooting. this will probably be my next barrel.

If you are looking for factory ammo that is available anywhere, then I would suggest the 270, 30-06, or the 308.  You can buy ammo for these where ever you go.

Though my favorite choice would be the 280.

From your list I’d have to go with the 308.  I have yet to visit a store that carries ammo that does not stock 308 or 30-30 for that matter.  In rural areas where dear hunting is popular even the mom & pop gas /mini mart/auto parts/sporting goods stations carry it.

Of the two you listed, I would go with the 308. If you go out side of that then the 30-06 would be an even better choice IMO. If you reload then I would say a 7-08 or a 280. The 25-06 is not a bad choice either, but if you do not hand load, ammo can be a problem to get a hold of quickly in some cases, especially if you need a certain brand and weight of bullet. I almost forgot the 45-70. It groups sub MOA. It has a range of 1000+ yards can be down loaded for varmints and kills like lighting on any thing that has paws or hooves. Good Luck and Good Shooting

Another 308 vote here.
Factory loading from 125 grain reduced recoil to 180 grain elk rounds are available.
Every so often Remington brings back the 22 Accellerator that is a .224 55 grain soft point in a plastic sabot for varmints.
these rounds will shoot what your rifle shoots.  So you print 1 to 2 inch groups at 100 so will these.

you told us to pick from 25-06 and 308, but the 25-06 even tho its a great gun is not really found at every walmart out there.

for what you want i would go with a 243 win. 55grs for yotes and 95's for deer . with a heart lung shot a 243 will have no probs killing a deer, and with itsa light recoil you could get real good with it without killing yourself
curiosity killed the cat , but i was lead suspect for a while

My choice would be the .308.  I presently have a 7-08 Remington Mountain Rifle but if I was to do it over again I would choose the .308 instead.  I do not re-load this caliber and have to go to a specialized gun store (expensive) to buy 7-08 ammo.  .308 is found right in walmart for cheap.  I'm hunting this year with a .30/30 Handi and enjoying it very much.  Haven't fired a factory round out of it yet.

I've gotten away from the oddball calibers after I spent an afternoon and a tank of gas trying to find some factory 25WSSM for my M70... finally gave up and sold it.  Got a .308 and now I can get ammo anywhere... My vote = .308...

.308 hands down, out to and beyond 400 yards.  Deer, fox, coyote..if you can see em you can whack em.  It wasn't the Vietnam sniper rifle by accident.

My brother last year was wanting to get his wife a new rifle after she had proven herself on a hog hunt with her 243 handi ... My brother sought my thoughts on a good caliber choice for this new rifle and it ended up a browning BLR in 308.... Like others have mentioned that one caliber has a massive collection of manufacturers producing it in any way shape or form you could want it in... Find it damn near anywhere .. Can still get that good shooting federal blue and silver box for $12 and change at wally world .. And has been proven at over 2500 yards by the late Mr. Carlos Hathcock, Really what more do you need to know heh ??

Dont get me wrong thou the 25 06 is a great flat shooting round ... good for deer and varmints .. 308 just covers those and goes up to elk and moose, heck you name it
